On Monday night for Family Home Evening, we talked about things that we could do in our home to feel more peace. We had a great discussion about things that make mommy frustrated and how we can all work as a team to make everyone happier. We came up with a list of our top THREE to work on this week.. and if we succeeded for 7 days, we would celebrate with blizzard's at DQ next FHE. Here's our short list:
1. Have morning prayers before daddy leaves for work.
2. Read scriptures every night at 8:00 p.m.
3. Keep our floors clean.
I voted for "keeping the HOUSE clean" instead of just the floors, but Aaron thought it would be easier for the boys if we kept things simple. Little did I know that we would need to be a lot more specific than that. Our third rule should have stated: "No throwing firecrackers (or anything else that makes a loud noise or a big mess) on the tile floors in the kitchen." Now, don't get too excited. They didn't actually light a rocket, but they did manage to spread an entire box of snaps- and all that nasty stuff inside- ALL over my tile floors. I was frustrated (to say the least) that Ben and Luke did this and not little Z. But I gave them the dust pan and broom and they went to work cleaning it up.
About an hour later, I was vacuuming the living room when, to my surprise, the vacuum cleaner starts spitting out sparks.. and sounds as if it's cooking up a buttery bag of microwave popcorn. Apparently these little snaps make a MUCH bigger noise when they get inside a vacuum cleaner.. Who would have guessed?! After one short day, we'd already failed our FHE challenge = goodbye blizzards.. This situation is the very thing that inspired Luke to say such a heartfelt prayer at bedtime. (see "You know it's been a bad day when".. in the right column)

Sometimes I need to sit back, take a deep breath and blame the person who is really responsible. I believe a certain grandparent sent a special box of "monster pop firecrackers" to her grandson just a few days ago.. isn't that such a thoughtful birthday present? Grandparents know exactly what will make their grandchildren happy.. which sadly, is the very thing that makes their parents lose their minds!
Our previous snap, crackle pop experience was probably more messy, but definitely not as exciting!

not this cute anymore!

As soon as I read the part about firecrackers on the kitchen floor, I cringed and felt terribly guilty, and then I laughed.
Lots of love to everybody,
...from a certain grandmother
Hey Janet, I just wanted to say Hi since I mentioned that I found your blog! You are such a good writer! Drew got excited when I showed him some of your pictures because he loves you guys so much! Your blog is fun to check out because it looks like you guys always have a lot going on!
Thanks for the Blog invite. Sorry to hear that the challenge was short lived : (
Sam
The snaps and the vaccum are really funny (frustrating I am sure)! I think it's so sweet that your kiddos were praying for you to be nice... I had a day like that today too! :)
That is the Prayer that cuts deep, unfortunatly I have been on the end of that prayer several times. Hey, I figure I need all the prayers I can get. My mother always says{after raising eleven}I did my share of yelling and you all made it. So pat yourself on the back for making it through the day. I was just there in Vegas and it was chilly for Vegas, so who wouldn't be a little grumpy? Thanks for the invite. Today is a new day.
I have to say you are the best blogger I know and it's real treat to read how you are just like the rest of us moms. It gives me hope that I am doing something right!
Janet, this made me laugh so hard! Life's gotta be very entertaining in the Shumway household. It reminds me of a story that my Mom loves to tell of the day that my 6 brothers decided it would be a great idea to have a pudding fight (chocolate too) in the middle of the kitchen. She found stains for years after. At least you don't have 6 boys...yet!
Glad to hear that Ben and Luke aren't totally perfect. Okay maybe they are... They were just having a little fun.
