We nicknamed it the BITTER BEER FACE and we could get him to do it on command. After the whole room was laughing, he would laugh too... but only because he knew HE was being hilarious. (He would never smile or laugh at anyone else trying to make him laugh. Such an odd baby he was... but definitely cute.)

When he turned one year, he would no longer do the bitter beer face-- not for anyone. And we've mourned it ever since. He has grown up into such a handsome little boy. He can work a camera like no other, by far my most photogenic child. His face is chiseled, his dimples come out only when he wants them to and his eyelashes are to die for. (Click on the collage and check out the blue man picture to see his long, dark eyelashes.)

With that said, recently Luke is going through this awkward (ugly) little boy stage. He pulls odd faces and makes sounds that just make me want to scream, "WHY are you doing that?" It's not anything inappropriate or bad, it's just WEIRD and I don't get it. To make matters worse, he doesn't have any front teeth.. Of course, I still love him and think he's handsome. But what happened to my adorable little boy?
The past week or so, Luke brought back the bitter beer face. He's been using the new space in his mouth to suck in his top lip. Sometimes I will look at him in the rear view mirror and just cringe. He does it out in public all the time and when I ask him a question, he will will look at me with an expression like so:
Sorry about the terrible lighting. obviously I'm not a profesh at taking pictures, but we all knew that.I'm sure his bedhead isn't helping the situation, but how are you supposed to respond with a child looking like THIS all day? Laugh or slap him out of it? Why are boys so ODD? Am I a terrible mom or do your kids go through UGLY stages too? You can comment as anonymous if you want :)
ps. Luke, if you ever read this know that Ben has been going through an ugly stage for a couple of years now and I've loved him all the while. It will be okay. Somehow, we will get through this.

not this cute anymore!

Why are boys so odd?
I ask myself the same question 10 times daily. I feel your pain.
Oh, and I'd slap it out of him. (Just kidding--almost).
I think seven to seven and a half is the beginning of the "awkward age". My Luke has been there for a while, but just last night I was looking at a picture of Isabel just back in March and she was so little and cute! They are still great now of course of course, but you know exactly what I mean.
luke isn't seven yet. but he's always been advanced.
basically you're just a terrible mom!
I know exactly what you mean about asking your kids WHY ARE YOU DOING THAT? They look at me like I am a crazy woman because they're not doing anything wrong, they are just being so awkward
I'm glad that I'm not the only one that wonders why boys are so odd. Jayben must be advanced because he is only 4 and there are days that I look at him and think he looks so awkward. But then I laugh.
that is a crazy face!
but totally normal feelings. teenagers go through some mighty awkwardness too...
Ryan has the most annoying new 'gangsta' voice he has been using on us. I try to take a deep breath, so that I don't punch the gangsta right out of him. He doesn't really want to be one, just thinks he is funny when he does it. You're lucky so far it's only goofy faces. Once the voices start....
Gotta love those crazy boys! (And I think Luke is still handsome, despite his missing teeth and bitter beer face! If I had a girl I'd want to set her up with him someday. Oh wait, I don't have girls...just weird boys)
My six yr old is driving me crazy these days. He likes to act like a cross between a 2 year old and a wild animal while giving me kisses all over my face in public. I think its attention related for him. Sometimes I seriously wonder where I've gone wrong with him.
Seriously, now I don't feel so bad. I haven't admitted to anyone that I think my oldest is going through an ugly stage. It's his hair. It drives me crazy, plus he keeps picking at his lips, making them scabby and chappy. Oh well, Luke is still a cutie, and Ty is too. Gotta love em. And yes, his eyelashes are to die for!
