biker baby

Simon's present from Santa was too big to pack in the car, so he opened it when we arrived home. He is mega jazzed about his bike! Every time we go out to walk the dog, he wants someone to push him on his new wheels... and usually there is someone around who will.

How to start your own conversation jar

1. Find or buy a container (Tupperware, mason jar, small box, etc.)

2. Print off the following questions, cut them into individual slips and put them in the jar. Draw randomly.

3. Keep it next to your table for stimulating dinnertime conversation (also great to keep around for a party with friends or bring in the car for a long road trip!)

Letters to Afghanistan

A few months ago, our Primary wrote letters to soldiers in Afghanistan. A woman in my ward has a son serving in the army and wanted to send them a nice Christmas care package. Today I received an email from this woman telling me to look at her son's facebook profile picture. I laughed so hard when I saw the letter he was holding up. I never saw what my kids wrote, but I am so glad to have it documented now....
Under this picture, Danny wrote "The kid who wrote this is probably the coolest ever." Yes, he is. He's very literal, too.

Browsing through a few other pictures, I found other soldiers posing with the picture too. I don't know if I should be embarrassed or proud... but I laughed so hard I almost cried. That's my boy!

rainbow sprinkle cake

Zack and I met the birthday boy for lunch at Chili's. He was coming from a deposition and wore a suit. I sat across the table from him and thought he looked mighty sexy. While waiting for our bill, Zack stood up in the booth and turned to look out the window. Before I could tell him to sit down he smiled back at us and said, "Stop looking at my butt, you guys!" So glad we brought him on our lunch date.

I made manicotti for dinner. It was super cheesy, just the way Daddy likes it. We ate by candlelight and gave a toast to Grandmother who gave birth 34 years ago. We had rootbeer in our champagne glasses. And then we busted out the traditional rainbow sprinkle cake. Aaron requests it each year. The boys helped him blow out the candles and when we turned the lights back on, I was afraid the smoke alarm would ring and wake the baby-- and freak out our puppy. 34 candles looks like a miniature forest fire.
Dad cut the cake and I took a picture of Scar Face (aka Luke) who split his forehead on the trampoline last night.
Maybe we are terrible parents for butterflying the awful cut instead of taking him in to get stitches, but I think he's going to turn out just fine. I feel a little sad that his forehead will be forever changed, but I think he will sport the scar nicely. His face is handsome enough.
While eating cake and vanilla ice cream, Aaron told me he came up with a New Year's resolution for himself, but I would never guess it. I tried listing the most outrageous things I could possibly think of, but I never came close. He said he wants to start his own blog in 2011. I practically spit my cake out. I told him he would never actually do it, and he said that reverse psychology won't work on him, which made me laugh even harder. I would be absolutely thrilled if he started some kind of online journal for himself, but I am slightly worried he's having a mid-life crisis.

The boys just came back from walking the dog. We still don't know what to call her. Why is naming a puppy harder than naming a child? Padme is out. Sunny is still a maybe, but we've also played around with Jo, Cleo, Honey, Mona, and Dixie. I think Dixie would be awesome because it's the name of one of Aaron's ex-girlfriends. In fact, I am going to try to sell it to the kids tomorrow. Anyone have any better suggestions?

diggin for gold

Cindy just emailed me a few pictures that were taken back in December. I thought I would share this one of Simon because it's.... marvelous.

The photographer at Cindy's wedding (apparently) took this shot of me at her luncheon. I know they must have used a major zoom lens because I don't remember someone being that close to me. Looking at this makes me feel old. Not depressed, just a little more determined to use wrinkle cream or sunscreen... or maybe just start washing my face at night.

This is my parents and their ten children. We're all awesome.

These are the last pictures added to my blog book for 2010. I haven't printed it yet because I can't think of an appropriate title. The cover currently says, "Twenty-Ten. The Year of our Dog." But we didn't get Sunny until December 25th and it seems odd to dedicate a whole year to her when she was only around for a week of it. I have been trying to come up with something clever or something that rhymes with Twenty-Ten but nothing seems to fit... any suggestions?

Aaron- Question #1

If Aaron wasn't an attorney, what would he do for a living?

Aaron- Question #2

How would you describe Aaron in one word?

Aaron- Question #3

What was your first impression of Aaron OR what is your favorite memory with him?

Firty-Four

It's his birthday today. Not the one looking at the camera, the other one.
I think 34 is a handsome age. He's exactly the same as he was when he was 24, except now he has a few more gray hairs. He's still funny and kind and easy-going. He's also organized and clean and always on time. He does calf-raises in the shower, eats cold cereal every morning and sometimes gives driving lessons to under-aged children.

We've been through a lot together. I feel lucky to cuddle up to such a warm, sweet, intelligent 34 year old man each night. He's everything I've ever wanted in a best friend and husband.

PS. If you know him and want to participate in our family birthday questions, go HERE. I am so late putting up the questions, but I doubt he will care... He's cool like that.

wowee

Several years ago, we swore we would NEVER go out of town for Christmas again. We broke our vow and spent Christmas 2010 with the most excellent people. It was SO worth the packing up presents, traveling, sleeping in unfamiliar beds, staying up all hours of the night talking, driving through snow, etc, etc. We arrived home this afternoon and Aaron headed straight into the office :( Our puppy traveled great on the 6 hour drive and we only stopped once to go potty. Lots to document, but now is not the time. Must get some sleep.

I know this is the worst picture ever (thanks to my husband and his phone) but I thought I would share anyway.. This is my parents and their ten children. We were all so happy to be together. We were all in the sealing room for Cindy's wedding, and all together to celebrate Christmas. Each of us married spouses that compliment us well and make our family even that much better. There are now 22 adults in our family and 33 grandchildren + one on the way. Kevin and Jen (who were married last August) just announced they're expecting. They came back to Vegas with us for a few days, so we're still partying like it's 1999.

I feel so lucky to belong to such a wonderful family. I am homesick for everyone already. My boys were devastated to leave their 30 cousins.... but we love our life in Sin City. It feel so good to be home!

Christmas card 2010

Merry Christmas! It's a GIRL!

We spent Christmas morning at my parents home with Cindy and Matt. It was so fun to make my boys sit and pose for a picture on the very same stairs I used to walk down as a little girl on Christmas morning...
The boys got new pj's, robes and slippers. They opened up a few Lego sets and then Grandpa brought in the last present wrapped in a blanket and a big bag..
My boys have been asking for a dog for way too long... and 2010 is the year she joins our family. Last night before we fell asleep, Luke said, "What if we get a dog?" I asked him this morning if he knew and he said, "NO! I didn't ever think we would really get one!"

Yes, we got a girl. She's a Golden... not quite 8 weeks old. We're still deciding on a name, but I think we've narrowed it down to two: Little Miss Sunshine (Sunny) or Star Wars inspired Padme (Paddie).. Vote to help us decide!

Simon absolutely loves her..
Except when he gets in trouble for hitting her..
Merry Christmas! God bless us, every one!

the stockings were hung by the chimney with care...

** I'm a little overwhelmed with the amount of pictures I have from our Christmas vacation. If I post a few everyday, I might get them documented by Easter...

Going home to the parents house for Christmas is always a treat. I moved into that home when I was five years old and hardly have any memories before then. This home is my childhood... everything good happened inside those walls. It is where I became me.

The Christmas decor is still the same, year after year. The village, the candy cane countdown calendar, the cardboard Santa kissing Mrs. Claus, the white flocked tree. I don't need pictures to remember, but need to take them so I can show my children. In fact, I need my mom to pass down all the decor so I hang it in my house (like that will ever happen with 9 of my siblings who want it too!) Maybe I can just have dibs on the village....

My mom was super busy planning a wedding just days before Christmas, so she wasn't able to put up the majority of her decor. But the stockings WERE hung by the chimney with care:

Growing up with THIS MANY stockings (slash siblings) was totally normal for me, but whenever a friend would come in the house, they would be shocked by the sight. I still remember a guy coming to my house to pick me up for a date and saying, "Whoa! Do you hang your cousins stockings too?" Nope. That comment still makes me laugh.... If he only knew that I have 60+ first cousins.

Do you notice anything odd about one of the stockings? All of the men have red stockings... oh, except for Kevin. His is white like all of the girls and we love to tease him. His stocking still says Baby's First Christmas. He's now 25. It took my mom so long to change it that it became the family joke, and now it just wouldn't be Christmas without Kevie's baby stocking..
Now that I am a mom, and I understand how hard it is emotionally, financially, physically to take care of children, I get a bit overwhelmed just thinking about my parents and the sacrifices they made for each of us. Our stockings were never stuffed.. In fact, I feel a little guilty "spoiling" my kids with presents in their stockings, when I think about the orange and a few chocolates I received in mine. But it proves to me that it's not important what you get as a child, it only matters how you feel. I felt so much love from my parents and siblings... and that is a gift I will carry with me for always and open up on lonely January afternoons when I am missing my family.

what we've been up to...

Sunday December 19th-- my parents' 40th wedding anniversary. Girls night at Deb's. Bedtime: 3 AM

Monday December 20th-- Wedding prep. My oldest sister (with the help of her 9 siblings and spouses) did the ENTIRE wedding... food, decorations, the whole shin-dig. We set up all day. In the evening, Aaron and I took the boys downtown to Temple Square to see the lights. It was heavenly. I met up with two best college friends (Val and Kelly) for a bit of girl time. Bedtime: 2 AM

Tuesday December 21st-- Cindy's wedding in the Draper, UT temple. She looked like an angel. All ten of my parents children were in the temple together. It was a beautiful day. Sealing, luncheon, reception... party, party, party! I can't believe Cindy is married. Bedtime: Midnight

Wednesday December 22nd-- SKIING! Aaron and I took Ben and Luke on the slopes for their first skiing experience. We also had their cousin Lilly. Two adults and three kids learning to ski is not as exciting as it sounds. I asked the kids how much fun they had on a scale from 1 to 10... they all screamed "TEN!" at the same time. For the adults it was about a two. The weather was terrible, and Lilly's dad who was supposed to meet us on the mountain totaled his car on the way up to Snowbird. Crazy day! I wasn't able to make it to my friends Christmas party :( Bedtime: 3 AM.

Thursday December 23rd-- Cousins gift exchange party. Dinner and BYU basketball game with the entire family. All 33 grandchildren will be together all day! My kids are in heaven!

Friday December 24th-- Christmas Eve at my parents. Nativity with the cousins. Hopefully to bed early. I am SO excited to give my kids their present, I can hardly stand it!

I forgot to bring my camera cord, so pictures to come later. Happy Holidays to you and yours!

skiing with the kids

Skiing is one of my all-time favorite past times, if not my very favorite. I've had big visions of teaching my boys to ski for the first time... So we squeezed it in between the wedding and Christmas-- which was a crazy idea to begin with.
The weather ruined everything. It was wet snow, which is the worst, especially for little ones who spend the majority of their time on their hineys. how do you spell hiney, btw?
Lilly's dad was supposed to meet us at the slopes (so each adult could teach one child) but the weather was so bad that he ended up totaling his car on the way up the mountain. Cars were literally sliding everywhere... and our van barely made it home. Anyway, I guess we made memories, even if they weren't the kind I wanted to...
The kids did well, considering the heavy snow (and how miserably cold/wet we were). To my great surprise on the trek back to the car, I asked the kids how much fun they had and without hesitation they all said "TEN out of ten!" Which means we will be going back soon.
On Christmas Day, a few of my siblings hit the slopes and Aaron and I thought about going, but decided it wasn't Christmas-like to leave our new puppy and our four kids with someone else to watch. It's unfortunate that we were able to spend more time on our skis this trip. Better luck next time...

P is for puzzle

I woke up to these two playing outside my door. I had my cell phone nearby and snapped a couple of pictures. Simon has become quite the apprentice to his big brother and luckily (this time) they were playing with something that was made for little boys to play with (and not peanut butter, powdered sugar, shampoo or an entire box of tampons...) It's amazing how THRILLED you can be to find puzzle pieces spread all over the floor!
If these pictures were a video, you would hear Zack's cute voice say, "YES! That IS the letter Y, Sy-Guy! You are getting so smart! Do you love the color blue? I do!"

sicky Sunday...

We got home from the live Nativity last night around 9 PM. Simon went to sleep, the older boys changed in their pj's and we met downstairs for some card playing. We've recently taught our kids how to play Rook and they are addicted. We play several hands everyday, but it's always more fun when Dad can join us. In the background, we had a DVD of Mystery Science Theater 3000 playing. Aaron checked out this old TV show from the library and my boys love it. I will have to admit that I laughed several times while it was on last night... even though I didn't want to.

We finally called it a night around 11 PM. Not a smart idea for 8 AM church, but Saturdays are our ONLY day with Daddy and we want to live it up to the fullest. Apparently Aaron's alarm went off this morning, but no one heard it. He is usually at the church at 6 AM, but we all woke up around 7:20. I quickly got dressed and went into the boys room to find a very sick Zack. I took his temperature and it was 103. Poor kiddo. He's been sleeping all day and is still running temps around 100. When he does wake to take some medicine or drink a bit of water, he repeats the same sentence. "I know why I'm sick, Mom. I was at the church for waaay too long yesterday." (We were at the ward party a couple of hours early to set up...) It's amazing what happens to him when he's sick. His personality has an ON/OFF switch and when he's not feeling well, you know it.

Simon has a pretty bad cough too. Sick kids are no fun.. We must get them better soon. The countdown for Cindy's wedding is in single digits! I can't believe she was living with us just a few short months ago and in a few days, she'll be a married woman! We are so excited to see all of our family! My parents have ten children and this is the last one to be married off! We've been waiting a long time to all be in the temple together. She might get mad at me for showing you one of her bridals, but I just can't help it. Isn't she beautiful? Yeah for winter weddings!!!

If this picture is down soon, it's because I got in trouble :)

celebrating Christmas

Tonight was the Christmas Dinner for our ward. It was the last ward party I will ever plan. But not the last party. Aaron and I took our four crazy boys shopping last night and filled up our cart with a million hams for the dinner. An older couple was watching us check out and I heard the woman say to her husband, "Look at that young family with all those boys. They are giving hams to their neighbors. They must be very wealthy." I wanted to tell her she was wrong on all accounts, but decided to let her think we were filthy rich. It's fun to pretend sometimes. Unfortunately, our neighbors are not getting hams. or anything homemade. In fact, I think I've resolved to skip a year of Christmas cards. Aaron thinks I am trying to trick him into writing a letter, but I'm not. I told him that there's only ONE way I feel okay about sending out Christmas cards and picture of our family: We have to be in our pajamas. No one can comb their hair, I can't wear makeup, and it must be taken in a part of our house where everything is a mess. Dirty dishes, or crackers smashed in the carpet, the kids noses are runny and poopy diapers are in the background. None of this matching sweaters/perfect life nonsense. That's not the life I am living and the only way I can send out a card is if it's an actual account of 2010.

Whoa. I had no intentions of writing any of that, but it came out anyway... I started this post to say that we snuck out of the ward party and went to a live Nativity put on by a local stake. It was outside and SO crowded. I've wanted to go all week, but we haven't been able to go (we live a crazy life, refer to the paragraph above) and tonight was the last night of the Nativity. We bundled up and waited an hour for it to start. Simon was so not happy, but he sat through it. We lost Zack at the end in the mounds of people and Ben and Luke liked it so-so. As chaotic as it was to go, it made me feel so happy and grateful. Grateful to know about the Savior and His birth. Grateful for the scriptures that teach us about Him. Grateful to have answers to the questions my children ask me. Grateful to focus on something so meaningful when we could be thinking about Santa and reindeer and elves instead. Grateful to go home with my family to a warm house. So happy to be celebrating Christmas with the ones I love!
The kid in back of us (smiling for the shot) is named Brigham. He brought all of his non-mormon friends and was trying to tell them about the church, but they weren't having it. One of the girls said, "So if you meet a supermodel who wants your bod, and she has a billion dollars and her dad is Elvis, you won't marry her if she's not Mormon?" Brigham calmly replied, "I would shake her hand and say, "It was nice knowing you." He was a cutie.

speaking of homemade ornaments...

I have a new calling in the nursery and thought I would do ornaments with the kids this Sunday. While preparing, my kids wanted to make their own.. I think they turned out pretty cute. (still need to glue on ribbons to hang them.)

You might be a redneck if you make your Christmas tree ornaments out of paper.

I thought I would be funny and add pictures of our Christmas tree. We've been married ten years and we still use an old (small) tree given to us by Aaron's parents. Every year we say we'll get a real tree, but when Christmas rolls around, we're either too busy or too lazy to actually do it. And so the little tree goes up. I find it completely amazing that people have "themed" trees with new ornaments each year. I would love to have one set of nice ornaments that kind-of-somewhat match. But I am practical (white trash) and tell myself it's better this way because expensive tree decor will get broken. And because it's ugly already, I allow the kids to make (& hang) whatever they please. Eventually I will have a nice looking color-coordinated wonderfully-smelling tree. For now, these ornaments make us happy.
To go along with the "the best things are homemade" theme, I thought I would post pictures of our favorite Christmas presents. Ben is the king of homemade gifts and started making toiletpaper roll "statues" in 2007.. I can't even count the number of statues he's made (grandparents, cousins, aunts, uncles, snowmen, Santa, etc.) but Aaron and I were the first. We've had them on our nightstands for a couple of years, but when Simon joined the family, we had to display them out of reach.
They've definitely faded over the years, but we love them so. (daddy's statue is playing tennis, btw.)
Yesterday we put lights and garland on the banister. The string of lights were brand new! As soon as we were finished wrapping it, half of the lights stopped working... so the top of the stairs (where no one sees anyway) is the prettiest part. I should take them down and back to the store, but who has time for that?
You might be a redneck if only half of your banister is lit up (and you leave it that way). You might be a redneck if your boys never comb their hair.

bobble head

Last night was Aaron's office Christmas party. Yummy food, great conversation, a talented high school choir, hilarious white elephant gifts and a few competitive Minute to Win It games. The firm recently hired another attorney named Aaron, so my husband is now affectionately known at the office as ShumDiddy-- which, I suppose, is better than ShumWhacker.. ?

Anyway, these sweet moves won us a free date to the movies...

absentee

Yes, we've been busy... girls weekends, holidays, visitors, shopping, etcetera etcetera. But let me be completely honest and show you the REAL reason I have been slacking on the blog:

We have FINALLY completed two ginormous puzzles. Both are 1000 pieces. I can now bear witness that not all 1000 piece puzzles are the same. The first one took us a little over a day to complete. The second one was an entire week. It was a doozy. When we finished we celebrated with an hour long dance party. Our necks had major crinks and our butts were sore for sitting for days on end, but we shook it off and felt relieved to have them done!! Have you ever worked on a puzzle so long that you fit pieces together when you close your eyes at night? I have.

I am not going to admit that I love winter, but I do enjoy it while it's here. Winter is a time for pajamas, hot chocolate, Christmas music, puzzles, cozy blankets, slippers and good stories. My favorite thing to do this time of year is curl up with a good book. I finished Pride and Prejudice last week and quickly picked up my all time favorite book Jane Eyre. I love Jane and tell my boys that she is my superhero fiction character. I want to be like her when I grow up.

We've been so busy puzzlin' and reading that we haven't watched a single Christmas movie or even put up our Christmas tree yet! That is happening today, my friends. It's a Wonderful Life, here we come!

girl time

Just spent the weekend with my favorite girls. The five of us have been besties since high school. We've been through the wringer together and it was SO good to pick up from where we left off. I L.O.V.E. each of these girls.
We got pedis (love my sparkly red toes!), went to the movies, ate yummy food and stayed up way past our bedtime crying and laughing. Karlin and I knew we shouldn't sleep in the same bed because we'd never go to sleep. The only reason why we eventually did is because we made a deal: "The next person who talks owes the other $20." We closed our sleepy eyes around 5 AM.
I wasn't able to hang out ALL WEEKEND because I had to work at my full-time job (motherhood). Speaking of which, I must get off the computer. My fifteen minute bathroom break is up.

If this was still November, I would say I am SO thankful for my sweet, funny, beautiful, strong, loving, talented, uplifting girl friends. I love being with you! You have made me the person I am today. More pictures to come... this is all I could steal off of facebook.

December already!

If you can't tell, I haven't been on the computer much lately. Life is passing by quickly and December has arrived!! Today we started our Christmas chain countdown and the boys are puzzlin'. We are almost finished with our annual 1000 piece and we may just start another one today, if the baby sleeps long enough.

I thought it was high time to change our Halloween header and threw the kids on the couch for a quick photo. Last year's header was so cute and Christmasey...
This is what I got today. Obviously no one was taking me seriously... oh well. this is what life looks like today. messy hair and silly faces.
So much has changed in a year. Simon fits in the pajamas that were Zack's last year (size 4-5T). Life with a toddler is crazy. This morning while I was washing dishes after french toast, Simon opened the pantry, took out a quart of olive oil, poured in on the tile and started ice skating around in his footsie pjs. I stopped him just as he opened up a jar of peanut butter (which would have made the clean up much worse.) He can now open the fridge and freezer as well as our shower door. A few times, he's surprised Daddy while in the shower-- and got really wet himself! He's a lot of fun, alright, but he's always into something. I am having all sorts of deja vu from a few years ago.

Zack needs an update of his own. I think it's been a month since I've recorded all the funny things he's said. I am ashamed to admit that many of them are forgotten. Last night, I asked him to play a game with Simon while I finished dinner. Zack took him in another room, but Simon quickly escaped. Zack chased after him screaming, "Intruder! Intruder!" Simon was running away fast! Zack finally cornered him and said, "You get back, young lady!" Ben said, "He's a man!" Zack said, "He sure isn't acting like it!" There's more where that came from, but I have boys who are telling me it's puzzle time, not computer time. And they're right.

I miss updating my blog and reading others, but this time of year only allows so much. I can't believe Christmas is only 24 days away!
