▲Making HUTS What is it about being under a blanket that is SO exciting? Is it just boys or what? You name it, we have made it into a fort of some sort... kitchen table, trampoline, beds, couches, etc. It's really not that hard and it's fun to get flashlights and tell stories under the blankets, even in the middle of the day. Food is also better inside a hut.
▲Number/Letter games we write numbers/letters on scrap paper and the kids go searching for them... but you can't get them out of their hiding spot unless it's their turn. This is great for
counting and learning the alphabet. (We have made it more complicated over the years-- like spelling certain words and having to find the letters in the right order. We also are do math this way. Example: What is 5+4.. find the right number....)
▲Treasure Hunts! We make up our own clues and hide them around the house. Sometimes they are simple, such as "the next clue is on the washer." If I feel really creative, they have rhyming and riddles. If I want my kids out of my hair for a bit, I send them on a task oriented riddle, "In order to get your next clue, you have to make your bed." When the job is finished, they are SO excited to find out which task is next.. this keeps them busy AND helps with cleaning. Usually at the end of the treasure hunt I hide a package of fruit snacks or another small treat. Ben and Luke now send each other on treasure hunts which is lots of fun for me!
▲Singing silly songs This started mainly when Zack joined our homeschooling routine, but I was so surprised to see how much my older boys love it! We spend lots of time singing "Do as I'm Doing" where they each take a turn to do something crazy (it's usually running around in a circle, while hitting their head☺) As long as I am doing it with them, it's fun. We also love monkey's jumping on the bed, popcorn, and once there was a Snowman-- (which can also turn into "Once there was a baby" or cactus, or tree.. but these grow bigger instead of smaller.)
▲Games- We LOVE games and I feel so lucky to have kids to play with because my husband is not such a fan... (but he's coming around.) We play Pick Up Sticks, Memory, Go Fish, Spoons, Mastermind, Sorry, Chutes and Ladders, Candyland, etc. It's usually best to do this when the baby is down for a nap, but sometimes he's included..
▲Art! Coloring is a MAJOR part of our every day lives. I probably throw away 30+ sheets of paper everyday and crayons are a must have in our house. Sometimes we create new animals.. Luke is in charge of drawing the head, Ben the legs, etc. We assemble our parts and give it a name. We love to paint, cut, glue and play with homemade playdough. I love to be at the table with them doing these things.. it really can be fun!
▲DANCE parties When there's tension with my kids, I usually blast music and have a dance party. For those of you who know me, I am not the best dancer-- but that's doesn't stop me from bustin' a move with my kids. This is more fun when Daddy is home because he has moves like it's going out of style. Dancing together can be so much fun (and helps you burn a few extra calories..) If you're feeling bored or down, whip out a good Christmas CD and turn up the volume.
▲Hide-and-Go-Seek (flashlight style) When it gets dark, this is their favorite thing. One person counts with the flashlight and there are NO other lights on in the house. Our kids usually hide in the same 3 spots but for some reason, it's still exciting. Zack is now playing along and knows how to be super quiet until you find him. We love this game so much that it is now a strictly reserved for FHE. My boys seriously count down the days until Monday night.
And last but not least..
▲READING! If my kids could chose any activity, it would be story time. They love to be read to and I believe it's because I try to make it exciting. I use silly voices and ask lots of questions ("Why do you think she did that?" or "What do you think will happen next?") There are so many good books out there and the next time you feel bored-- pick up a book! The library is our absolute favorite place to go. If the library is a frustrating place for you to take your kids... here are some tips. Create an account online.. do all your preparation before you go- and have the books waiting ON HOLD for you at the front desk. This way, you're not dragging the kids around, searching through the shelves. Spend your time there browsing and reading. Most children's sections are created for you to hang out there.. just relax and read together. We could NOT homeschool without a library.
So, that's our top ten list.

not this cute anymore!

Can I be your child? no wonder your boys are always so happy and giggly.. they have a grown up child for a mother!
Ok, here's my idea. We play store. (I know you had this on your blog earlier, but we did it first!) ha. we also love to play dress ups. makeup, hair nails, jewelry. but I don't recommend this to your family, at least not until you get another female in the house.
Also, how do you know who looks at your blog? I want to know all your dirty secrets!
Can't wait to check back with everyone's ideas!
Erika-
I HAVE tried playing hair, makeup and nail painting. But if Aaron ever finds out, I get grounded from the kids. But once I do have a girl, it's going to be beauty parlor in my house everyday!
and about the # of hits on my blog.. here is the secret you should know.. sorry I didn't tell you earlier.
If you have a blog, but don't have some kind of tracker, you are missing out. Val introduced me to statcounter.com a few months ago (I'll give the credit where the credit is due..) Once you install a short HTML code on your blog, you can see who checks in, where they are from, how long they visit and how often they come back. It's nice to know who's looking because we all know not everybody comments.. try 10 out of 100.
And for those of you who don't comment, that doesn't mean you can't visit. I wasn't trying to scare anyone off by saying, "I know who you are and where you live!" I was just saying COMMENT if you have one because we want to hear from you-- even if you don't know me or the connection is a distant one. Can't we all be friends?
Fav things at our house:
towers, this is the first game we made Evie play, Miriam builds the tower and Evie knocks it down, if this is the point of the game, it is very exciting.
Also because we are a girly house, there are lots of tea parties, with dressing up, of course!
Also, baking, Miriam loves to be involved in adding ingredients, finding them in the cupboards, stirring, etc. It is great. I am definitely going to use some of your ideas, especially the treasure hunt, that is sure to be a winner.
what a great mom you are, I am always so impressed everytime I read your blog. I'm going to have to try some of those with my boys!
You are amazing. This isn't so much a game, but a little thing we do at bedtime (you may have already seen this on my blog). Each night we do "happy time/sad time" and let Skylar said her happiest and saddest part of the day. It's so much fun to hear what she thought was fun and what wasn't.
Skylar loves using sidewalk chalk, coloring, going on walks, races, etc. I love your ideas and am going to steal them!
Lots of fabulous ideas! I love playing with Max and I am excited for him to get older to do even more with him.
I don't have too much to add yet from being a mom. We love reading and learning and being silly. We play a lot of ball and frequent the library, including Story Time for Little ones. We just aren't that exciting yet! :)
But from my childhood ...hmmm...homemade playdough, which you mentioned. Handstand contests were a big deal. Oh, and this was kind of a big event, but a big, fun memory for me. We couldn't afford to go to a waterpark one summer, although we all kept asking about it. One day my mom told us to get in our swimsuits and put some clothes on. She sent all 5 kids and Dad on a bike ride. When we got back to the house she had set up "Mannaging Waters" (like Raging Waters, but with our last name), complete with a sign and a concession stand. We all got a bit of Monopoly money at the beginning for treats throughout the day. The sprinkler was on under the trampoline, the slip and slide was out, our little pool was filled with water, there was a cooler full of water balloons which we played a game with. It was the very best day ever. I probably wouldn't have remembered Raging Waters, but you bet I remember Mannaging Waters. It was so much better - and cheaper - than anything else my parents could have done.
I'm gonna have to thing about it, but off the top of my head, most of our time is spent:
Reading
Cooking (Charlie loves to cook)
Dancing
Dress up (or any kind of pretend play, I would die with out our dress up bag)
Opposite game
Tresure Hunts
Eye Spy
I am an animal
There was more on the top of my head then I thought!
My daughter will do anything, if I pretend to be another character. I have to knock on her door, treat her like another adult, and use a different voice or accent, but it's fun!! I'm the dental hygenist when I brush her teeth at night, the "laundry folding teacher," " the toilet cleaning teacher," "cooking instructor," etc.. She especially loves me to be the babysitter and watch her "kids" (stuffed animals). When we play house, I realize how much she absorbs everything I say (Kinda scary). When I was pregnant with my second, the doctors thought the baby wasn't developed properly, (she turned out to be perfect after all) and I had to come in every other week for an ultrasound. During this time, I was "babysitting" my 3-year-old's "kids" and she knocked on the door and said, "So, the ultrasound looks fine, how did the kids do?" Sometimes it's liking looking in a mirror :)
you know where i live, how often i look at your blog, and now...you read minds? I was just barely thinking the other week that there was nothing to do in this town and how are we going to survive the winter. I love your fun list and we do many of these things. so thanks for the reminder... sometimes we just get in a rut and forget that there is lots to do if we just start having fun.
Oh, Janet the party house! What can I say... you are the best Mom around! Good ideas. I'll have to remember them. Avaree will seriously be happy doing anything on her level. She is an animal EVERYDAY and if I'm an animal... life doesn't get much better than that. She is so into coloring right now, which is fun because she is getting good at it and it is actually occupying her for a while. It's so fun how kids enjoy the littlest things. Love you.
Karlin (for some reason it is not signing in as my blogger name??)
Maybe this isn't the funnest thing in the world to post as 'fun things' we do at home for free, but we clean. My kids love helping around the house, and even though it is not done perfectly, they love to clean with me. All I have to do is give them a rag and off we go to clean the house. Other things we always do is 1-frequent the library (I love reading new things) and 2- the park, we can spend hours at the park having a picnic, or playing with friends, or taking a soccer ball or T-ball set. 3- I love cooking and so do my kids, we are always making new things.
Thanks for sharing all your good ideas, you have so many fun ones. We love to play hide-and-seek in the dark as well, but we use flashlights to go around and find each other. Another game that Ellie loves is hide the ____. We will take turns hiding a little pumpkin or anything and then everyone will find it. It is fun.
I am so happy that you're such a fun mom! Fun moms are the best, and I would have to say I had a pretty fun mom. I'm glad you post all your wisdom, I will need it someday. Keep it up girl!
great ideas - my little guy is just 20 mos so I'm beginning to feel the need for more and more structured ideas...thanks so much!
Great ideas! We're going to storytime at the library today and the 3 year old is just beside himself with excitement!
Thanks for the forts idea...it reminds me to think back to my childhood for easy ideas! My mom was very imaginative.:)
Jill
I love these ideas! We'll definitely be using some of them this summer! Thanks for sharing!
Oh I love the flashlight hide N' seek idea! Thanks for the suggestion.
OK, this is the first time I've been here, but I saw your comment on the side about COMMENTING, so here I am! (I have to admit I lurk a lot!)
Great suggestions-my kids (all 6 of them) will love the flashlight hide & seek! They'll be even happier if I don't hide for a long time! heehee
