This is going to be short because I just don't have the TIME to blog anymore... but I just wanted to quickly comment on last night's debate. I know the commentators thought it was a great debate (John McCain's "best" so far) but the only thing I can remember McCain saying is that "Americans are ANGRY." I was angry that he kept saying that over and over.. move it along already. Anyway, I watched it and felt sad that these were our two candidates for President. Where did we go wrong? Out of the MILLIONS of Republicans we narrowed it down to John McCain? Really? My favorite part of the debate was when McCain mistakenly called Obama "Senator Government." That was funny and I rewound it a couple of times to get an extra laugh.I am still undecided, but find myself leaning more towards The Conservative.. mainly because of the abortion issue and Proposition 8 in California (McCain supports, Obama does not.) Even though I do NOT agree with McCain's economic strategy or his support of the war in Iraq, I feel like I have to stand up FOR the institution of the FAMILY. It's the most fundamental unit of society and if IT fails, we are in big trouble.. the economy is of small consequence compared to our declining morals. I think McCain will have my vote even though he is a Loser--not a loser as in 'not cool', but a loser as in 'he's going to lose'.
We have been talking A LOT about the election in our home, especially over the dinner table and during homeschool hours. My boys think they know exactly what is going on and I often hear them in the background discussing who they are going to vote for and why (we will hold our own mini-election for school on Nov. 4th.) The other day, I heard Ben and Luke explaining to Zack that he is going to have to chose one or the other, but he could not pick both. The news was on and the older boys were pointing out to Zack which candidate was which.
Ben said, "Okay, you can either pick the OLD GUY or the GUY with BROWN skin, Zack. Do you see he has brown skin? He's only half black though, but his skin is still pretty brown."
That made me laugh. I minute later, I heard Zack mummbling something to himself about "BOCK OMAMMA." He can be so radical sometimes.
At the end of the debate last night, Ben asked me if I knew who I was going to vote for YET. I told him that I was still thinking about it. He responded with, "I am voting for John McCain because Barack Obama is trying to take over the world." He must have heard that line from his daddy.
My Prop 8 post is almost finished. I am trying to edit out a few thousand words because (like always) I've said too much.. Aaron warned me that shorter is better, so I am still working on it.
Hope you are all having a good day. If you are running errands, pick up a few cartloads of food storage.. I have a feeling we are going to need it real soon!

not this cute anymore!

For the record, I don't feel angry at all. Happy really. Maybe I'm alone on this one.
Also, if you had asked me to pick the next president, I don't think I would have picked either of these candidates. I wonder how many people would have? (Not at all the same question as how many people voted for each candidate in the primaries.)
I'm grumbling about it all as well. I guess it comes down to picking the lesser of two evils. Grrr.
The choice between bad and worse isn't as much of a choice as it is depressing. I'm not angry, just depressed.
Did you see Mitt Romney on the news after the debate (talking about what a great job Mccain did)? He looked and sounded so presidential. Too bad I never had a chance to vote for him.
Janet, we need to have a serious discussion. You CAN'T vote for McCain. It's not the lesser of two evils-- Obama is da' man (intelligent, articulate, surrounded by good sound people, and has a good solid plan on how to manage his administration. You can see this just in the way he has is running his campaign), and McCain/Palin are freakin' idiots (He's riding on the coat tails of his father, graduated bottom of his class, has done almost nothing impressive in the Senate, and she...well I have no idea HOW she got where she is). I need to do a post on him so I can articulate my thoughts a little better. I DO agree with you on the importance of proposition 8, and the family being the most important instition our government recognizes, but Obama can't really impact these moral issues (gay marriage, abortion etc...)-- not in the way the right is spinning them out to be. To me these are really non-issues in the polls, but they always become hugely blown out of propotion to scare the moderately conservative voters, and to pander to the extreme right. That's why it is almost more important who we elect locally. They are the ones who have a stronger impact on these issues. If you don't agree with McCain's domestic and foreign policies then you should NOT vote for him. These are the issues that the president WILL have a huge impact on-- and McCain will run things the way they have been running for eight LONG years-- and look where that's gotten us.
I probably shouldn't post this very opinionated comment. I'm sure most everyone is shaking their heads in disagrement. I just LOVE Obama. He's going to make a great president. Go "Bock Omamma!"
Janet
I also felt very sad while watching the debate. I cannot understand how any person in their right mind can vote for either of these two people. It was very sad to see both of them answer the question of a negative campaign by both being very negative about the other person. All I can say is if you can't see the awful situation we are in then you are blind. Please double your food storage if you have any love for your children. Dad
Janet- Don't listen to Jane (I'm sure that she is very sweet, but...) NO, it is not the way "things have been running for 8 years," it is the way things have been running since the inception of this nation. Our county was based on a capitalistic free market economy, and the "changes" that OBama is espousing would move us towards a social welfare state- he is nothing short of a Marxist that believes in the redistribution of wealth. And to say that Obama can't affect the social practices of our country is nothing short of ridiculous. There are 2 (and possibly 3) Supreme Court Justices that will be retiring in the next few years and it would be naive of us to think that Obama would not appoint the same types of Dumb %#&@^# that gave us Roe v Wade. The same reason you can't vote for Barrack is the same reason Johnnie Cochran said, "You can't trust the message if you can't trust the messenger."
Anyone who associates with Rev. Wright and his Anti-American rantings, spends time and seeks out the approval of William Ayers- an admitted domestic terrorist- and is willing to funnel hundreds of thousands of dollars to organizations like AKORN... his character deserves serious scrutiny. It is my belief that one of the greatest threats to America in the coming years will be our ability to produce the energy that is required to sustain the world's most potent economy. Obama refuses to create additional nuclear and coal power plants and is also vehemently opposed to expanded domestic oil production. He stated that he plans on further stifling the American economy by creating a "carbon tax." This would require businesses to account for their carbon footprint- How does he plan on keeping manufacturing jobs in America when he plans on raising their taxes and additionally assessing them fees for their carbon output? We can't build, transport or produce anything without energy. This will certainly stifle our economy. And although militarily we are the envy of the world, it was our economy that defeated the Soviet's in the Cold War and it is our weak economy that will embolden our enemies today. I will give him this though... he is a highly persuasive speaker (but one third of the host of heaven did follow Lucifer. Not that I am saying McCain is anywhere close to Jehovah :) He has some serious faults too).
Sorry!!!! Can't stop once I get going... I am TERRIFIED that Obama is going to be the next President!
Jane, I promise this was not aimed at you... I just want Janet to hear both sides of the story. :)
Janet, you are so brave to do political posts, I don't know if I dare do it again. I will say this though, I think Jane and I would BF. I agree with her. You'll make the decision you are most comfortable with because you are smart and knowledgable. That is the most important thing, that you vote your conscience.
Signed, a Bock Omamma supporter
PS The free market capitalist thing we got goin' on... NOT WORKING so much anymore, in case you didn't notice.
There is a major nail out there that Brooke just DROVE HOME.
That Obama guys ia a freakin socialistic, anti-american. He wants to change everything that is FUNADAMENTALLY american.
We probably won't even have Coke anymore if he wins. Could you live life in this country without coke?
I really don't like that people paint Obama as some evil person who is out to ruin the world. It's just not true. He has different opinions about how to run the country but so did Bush. He was able to start a war and spend billions of dollars and allow so many people to be killed over what? Not freedom, not terrorism, but OIL. And that to me, is evil.
But when you consider the moral issues, it REALLY does matter. Obama will have the opportunity to appoint Supreme Court justices that will be very liberal. The court right now is split down the middle.. Abortion issues are only passing on a 5/4 vote. If we can get another conservative judge on the bench, it could be changed. And the gay marriage issues will MOST DEFINITELY affect our country.. our education systems and essential our right to practice religions freely (exactly what this country was founded on.) To say that the moral issues will not have an affect on our children's lives is nonsense. And I feel like I have a duty to stand up for morality. I know it's declining anyway, but we have to do all we can do. I am not siding with extremist who paint Obama as the BAD GUY, but I have researched it thoroughly and can't vote for the guy. Wish I didn't have to vote for the OLD MAN.
oh, and the only reason I did another political post was to get my husband to comment! Wahoo! I guess he is bored with all the family stuff and cute pictures of the kids.
I really don't understand the hysteria over the economy. I can see how difficult it would be for the older generation who are looking at a much bleaker retirement, but basically for us young people what we're saying is, we aren't going to be as rich as we'd hoped. My brother-in-law had half of his house burn down last week, and totaled his car the next day. And his comment was, "We are still are so much better off than others." He grew up in Mexico, with nothing. I think we forget that poor in America is still rich compared to most of the world. And having lived in a socialist country, they have lots of problems, high taxes, unemployment, less opportunity, and they still feel the government isn't taking care of them well enough. I'm in my mid-30s, husband still in school, with no material goods to show and a whole lot of student debt. But even though we're "poor" by the world's standards, we have everything we need. Food, shelter, etc.. And I have a hunch, that in some ways, we'll look back on these as some of our happiest days, because our lives and finances are so simple. Anyways, sorry to get on my soap box. But sometimes when I'm listening to all of the discussion about the economy, I feel like saying, "Stop the hysteria!!"
Jane, people are so fed up with the Republican party right now that Obama wil have a filibuster-proof Congress. He will be able to get a lot more of his inititaves passed than recent presidents, for better or worse.
Also. I loathe voting for McCain, but I'll tell you why I CAN'T vote for Barack (other than his stance on certain social issues): His economic policies are disastrous and he is EXTREMELY misleading regarding them. He talks about tax cuts for the middle class and small businesses, but he doesn't seem to know what he's talking about regarding small business.
My husband has owned several small businesses, and we have owned a couple together, so I know of what I speak.
When Obama says he wants to tax those making "more than a quarter-million dollars a year", that includes small businesses- a fact that he has danced around. That is, until the second debate when he acknowledged that was true and then made the LUDICROUS claim that "98% of small businesses don't make $250,000 a year". WRONG. $250,00 is not much for a small business to make in a year. One of our businesses made significantly more than that in its first year in operation. First year. Mind you, that's what the business made, not what WE made. After taxes, payroll, insurance, equipment, and so on, there wasn't a whole lot left to split between the partners and maintain a profit. At the time, the gubenatorial race was going on in Nevada, and one of the big issues was "taxing the wealthy", which again includes small businesses. It's a sneaky part of the tax code. Had Dina Titus won, the business's accountant informed my husband and his partners that they'd basically have to fire all of the employees if the intended on keeping their doors open.
Most of the businesses in America are small businesses, and most of them easily make $250,000 a year, contrary to what Senator Obama said. I bet a lot of us or our husbands work for a small business, one that might not be able to afford to continue to employ as many people if their taxes are raised (especially with Nevada's genius minimum wage laws).
Also, the problem with a society that redistributes wealth is that it removes incentive to work hard. Why should I work hard to become successful if the government is just going to take the majority of my money and do with it as they see fit? People begin to see that whether they work hard or do nothing, they get the same result, so people stop working hard. And then there's less wealth to redistribute. And then you have a HUGE problem. Look at the truly socialist societies- Russia, for instance. I don't want to live like that, do you?
Barack Obama may not be able to create that sort of society in 4 years, but that's the sort of society he WANTS. He believes in government programs for every problem under the sun, the redistribution of wealth, and that everyone deserves to have equal lifestyles. I just don't believe in that sort of stuff. I think if someone works hard, they deserve to keep the fruits of their labors. If they choose to help the less fortunate, good on them, but it's should be THEIR choice. I believe that we need less government, not more, and in the final debate, Obama's answer to everything was more government and more spending. Guess where that money's coming from? You and me and the businesses that employ us.
I could go on, but I won't. I just think we need to look past Obama's charisma and understand what he stands for. Last time I checked, America wasn't founded on Marxist ideals.
That is all.
Nice Janet! I am glad you posted on this. Sorry I was so mean about Obama. I didn't know much about him when I posted before and I was only repeating things other people were saying. Now that I have actually taken the time study up on the candidates, neither sound good to me. Yes, I am quite conservative, especially when it come to protecting the family and marriage, so I'll probably vote for McCain.
I know McCain is going to loose, but I think he will have my vote because he supports the family.
Thanks for your thoughts! I hope you aren't mad at me. It can be difficult to read moods from comments and emails. I feel like some of my comments on things in the past have come off to you as not been very friendly. That wasn't my intention. I respect and value your opinions. I love reading your blog and think you are the cutest and funnest mom.
Your kids are very funny and I love that they are wanting to vote. I am sure they will do a lot of great things when they are older.
I agree on the food storage. Times might be getting tougher. I just stocked up at Costco yesterday.
:) Tiffani
Love the Bock Omamma thing. My four year-old daughter is voting for Dora!
I know - I feel like John McCain was literally RAMMED down our throats by the media, only now to have them (and much of his party) bringing up the obvious weaknesses.
But whatever - because we have him now. And That does beat Mr Socialist Obama.
We live in Obamaland here in Chicago - and nothing he ever does, says, or leaves undisclosed is ever questioned. Yeah, we WOULD like to know what his Harvard and Columbia records and past was - but that is not allowed to be disclosed. Makes you wonder...
One of the hugest coverups ever! Thank you liberal media.
