simplifying

One of my goals this year has been to simplify my life. I believe I have come a long way in just 7 short months. I think the more you cut out, the more addicting it is. I am doing less, taking more time to smell the roses, relaxing more, reading more, spending hardly any time on the computer.. blogging less, cleaning more- and more efficiently, cooking all the time, watching practically zero tv, teaching my kids the important things, and enjoying the now. Life is really good. I know that in 3 months everything will change again and I am just enjoying the simple life while I can.

Several months ago, I found myself frustrated at all the STUFF I had in my house. Since then, I have had no problem clearing out everything unnecessary. And believe it or not, after giving away 1/2 of everything, we still have way more than we need.

This is the boys' closet. We moved their dressers into the guest room (which are still empty) and decided to do closet dividers for their clothes. I am really surprised how well it's worked out. This has been especially helpful for Zack. He has access to everything and doesn't have any excuse to not fold and put away his own clothes. Yes, three year olds (even crazy ones) can put everything where it belongs. This also allows Ben to stay as organized as he needs to be-- and he is punished if I catch him folding or putting away his brother's clothes. They are all old enough to do it themselves..

I set limits on their clothing items. They still have more shirts than they currently wear, but if it doesn't fit in the cubby, they either have to get rid of it (or have to fold the items better so they all fit.) It has really simplified life for everyone. And as long as I keep up on laundry (which has always been one of my secret talents) they have more than enough.

And as much as I loved having lots of Sunday outfits, we gave everything away except for one white shirt each and one pair of church pants. That's all they really need-- and even though it's not as "fun" to dress them in their cute vests and sweaters, they still look handsome on Sundays. And they always know what they're wearing... simple.

Since I mentioned my lack of style (and clothing) last week, I am including a picture of my closet.. it's obviously nothing exciting, but it's definitely enough for me. Yes, these are ALL of my shoes. (Actually, I have a pair of sandals that I keep downstairs and my white moon boots are stored in winter bin.) I realize I have no style, but it is what it is.

A little while ago, Aaron's parents came to stay and his dad mentioned something about feeling sorry for me after seeing my side of the closet. That made me laugh because maybe it would be depressing for other women to be lacking in the clothes/shoes department, but honestly, I have way more than I need. Granted, I wished that it fit better, but all in due time. What would really make me happy is to get nice matching hangers. Eventually when we're rich, I will buy them... and a nice shoe rack. I've had that thing since jr. high.

One thing I have found is having a place for charity items in each closet has really worked well for me. I used to have a bin in the garage, but the items never actually made it out there. We have given away SO many toys, household items and clothing. It's addicting, I am telling you! And the more you give away, the less you feel like shopping or buying anything else.

So-- my question is, what organizational/simplifying tips do YOU have? I know hundreds still read everyday. Any good ideas to share with the rest of us? Do tell.

I have NO good ideas! I am horrible at all things organization. I am feeling more motivated to see your progress! What an awesome woman you are! Thanks for being a good example to a pack rat like me!

Janet,
You are truly inspiring. I need to get my 3 year old to read this post. "See honey - your arms AREN'T broken and you ARE big enough to take care of your stuff!" I'm going to go pack up a DI box right now...

Thank you so much for this post! Just earlier today, I wrote a post on my blog about how overwhelmed I am feeling with everything and needed tips to simplify. This is pure genius!

I am going to track down one of those closet organizers for my son so that he can reach everything and keep his clothes organized. I also love the idea of a charity bin in each closet. Makes things much more convenient to donate.

Thanks for sharing!!

I am simple... my secret is to move every 18 months and you throw/give about half of your stuff away each time. I have no junk...and I HATE clutter. But, if you choose not to move every other year... Yard sales are great motivators.

I wish I had tips to share...but I'm a student not a teacher on this subject! Thanks for showing your simplified life. We will hopefully (fingers crossed) be getting into a house next fall and I'm already dreading the move. I am determined to start throwing/giving things away.

Mine is a take off Annie's suggestion: Go help someone pack and/or help move. Even the hauling of boxes and boxes to the moving van is motivation for me to head home and dejunk! The other thing is to actually take everything out of a closet or area and lay it all out. It is amazing how well we can make things fit in a cupboard, so much that we forget what is in the back. So taking it all out (I suggest only one area at a time so you can put away without giving up) and laying it all out on the dining table will make it even easier to not try to put it all back as it will seem like a lot of stuff! You are right, it is addicting!!

How fun Janet! I love to see other people organizing ideas. This is a secert obsession of mine. There is not a day that goes by that I don't organize something or reorganize it for that matter. I was just thinking today about blogging about it! How fun. Be sure to check my blog for my ideas!

I like to give stuff away to friends when they mention that they like it. Somebody will say "ooh that's a pretty bracelet" and I'm like "well you can have it if you like it that much." I didn't really notice that I didi this until Jake said something about it. It's a lot of fun.

Love it!! We're trying to do the same. The other thing I'm working on, is having one small bin for "treaures" i.e. rocks, sticks, toys from the dentist, etc.. and one bin for "favorite art projects" And once they're full, they have to still limit themselves to the space. Audrey and I spend alot of time talking about how it's okay to send on things that used to be our favorite, to make room for new favorites. It seems that the toys, boxes, stick, rocks, etc.. were multiplying, and we were drowning in clutter, but that is helping. We also have decided that if they can't keep their room clean, they have too much stuff. We only moved in a few of their toys and books, but they can earn some more, by keeping things clean. Audrey's room is now spotless all the time. I gave away tons of toys, but still have three bins in storage. On rainy days, I can bring in a ziplock bag with her "Cars" collection, and it will be cool and fun, for an hour until it's time to put them back in the storage shed, but I'm no longer breaking toes, with everything on the floor.

You've got a new talent that you are WAY good at...like you need another talent... You KNOW I LOVE it! You have totally got me beat. I'm going to tackle my closet Monday and go from there. There's nothing better than an organized house with minimal clutter. It definately makes life easier. I've got to get back into it:)
BTW I miss you lots!!!

Clutter bothers me more than anything else. I got a lot of tips from you in previous post you wrote about this same kind of thing. One thing I do is go through the mail as soon as I get it. I put all unwanted ads directly into the recycle bin. Then I read the ads I want to read, and put them in the recycle bin when I'm done. I know exactly where to find them if I need to refer back to remember what is on sale at what grocery stores.

Your house looks great, Janet. Very organized. And I don't think you should say that you don't have style just because you don't have a lot of clothes. I always think you look cute whenever I see you.

I'm making progress....today I finally shredded old bills and bank statements from 2002. Yes, I'm a packrat, and my new, BIG, full closet is embarassing. However, I've decided to put all that simplifying drudgery off until the long, lonely winter months, and I'm holding onto summer as long as I can :). You and Aaron make a good pair...I remember him packing all his wordly belongings in one trunk before he left on the mission! What a great team!

EEEK! I'm glad you did this post. Just today I was feeling sooo overwhelmed. DREADING school starting up - I love the relaxed pace of summer! AND I'm sooo not ready for our little surprise coming in October. It'll be SEVEN for us! We are cramped in a 2200 sf 5 bedroom home... I can fit another crib in the house and move beds around, but I DO NOT know where I'm going to put all this baby stuff! (Well, I already have a lot of other baby BOY stuff out because my current baby is just 14 months old!). I just had one of those days... tired of the sticky floor that must have 10 layers of grime. Junk everywhere, never feeling like I'll catch up, and the thought of fitting one more in here... yes, I was near tears! SO - I'm glad I read this post and I think the best thing to do will be to just start eliminating!! BEFORE I bring more stuff in!

ALSO - I'm freaking out becauase I was out of town for nearly two weeks and missed The Bachelorette final episode! AND THEY DON'T HAVE IT ON ABC.COM!!!!!!! GRRRR! So I'm dying to hear your personal thougths one day. I'll have to live it through you! :)

Wow, I should just copy and paste this on my blog and have my first post in a month or so!
