media fast

There lives an incredible Bishop in Spokane. He is inspired, thoughtful and very personable. Our family was lucky enough to be in his ward for 18 months. There are many things he taught me, but one lesson in particular sticks out in my mind. The week before Easter, he challenged the ward members to go on a MEDIA FAST...seven days without television, the internet, movies, radio, magazines, or the newspaper. He testified that if we took the challenge, we would feel a greater Spirit in our home and be more enlightened (and prepared) for Easter. Our family took that challenge and it was a difficult week. But that Easter Sunday was one to remember.

I am such a busy body; I do not feel comfortable unless there is lots of NOISE. I think growing up in a big family made me uneasy with silence. If I am not watching a movie... then my ipod is on.. and I do EVERYTHING on the internet. I am a media addict. But today in church, I was thinking about what I could do personally to prepare Christmas. I really want to do something that can help me be spiritually ready for the Savior's birthday. The only thing I can think of, something that will be a real sacrifice for me, would be to have another media fast. It's painful for me to commit to because I rely on the computer, but I really feel like it's something I can and should do. I spend so many hours checking my email, blogging or watching Oprah... and that time can be put to better use. There are so many books that I would like to read and projects I want to do for the Holidays... and there are little boys who would rather play with me than watch Spongebob. For lack of better words, this is my grown up Christmas wish.. a gift to myself.

So, starting tomorrow... I will not be turning on my television, radio, or computer.... I am checking out for 7 DAYS and will be back next Monday. If you need to reach me, my phone still works!

Good luck - that one would be hard for me. I like to have noise, and I have certain things I like to watch, listen to, and how did I live before I did the Internet thing? I am guessing you will probably not even miss it after the first little bit. In the summer time we go quite a bit without TV at least - and I definitely feel a giddy freedom.

GOOD LUCK :)

What am I going to do all week? I've gotten so used to being in contact everyday. I will have to call you.
