So long, farewell

Aaron's grandpa passed away this week and we are headed to Phoenix for the funeral services. Chester was 96 years old and lived a good life. He had an excellent memory and could tell you stories from his childhood as if it happened yesterday. He was a HARD worker and saved every penny. He used the same toothpick for a decade even though he had enough money in the bank to feed a small country. He was a great man (despite the he fact that he was a little racist. But we'll blame that on his generation. He was born almost 100 years ago!) We are very grateful to be living close enough so we can honor him this weekend. We won't be back in Vegas (or on the Internet) until Monday.

And now that I have announced our departure, you know that our house is empty--and all of those craziest (who never comment) will want to come rob us. As I mentioned before we don't have anything of value, so have at it. In fact, we'll even leave the key under the mat. If you get hungry, there is left over lasagna in the fridge that needs to be eaten.

Have a great weekend!!

Hey - I am Lindsay Hagblom's sister. I just came by for the first time, and saw the note to leave my identity. Great writing. You make me laugh. Sorry I can't help clear up any of the other 450 unknown people!

Morning!! I am Shanna, and I found your blog through another (Princess Nebraska?). I find that you are very real and so far I can relate to you. I don't remember if I have commented so I figured I would identify myself so as not to freak you out! I am sorry to hear about Aarrons grandpa, I hope you get an opportunity to enjoy your weekend despite the reason for travel. Thanks!

I am Susan from AZ and I have been reading everyday for about six months. If you went private I would HATE it. Sorry I haven't commented before. I don't have an up and running blog so I just don't feel qualified to have an opinion on all your GREAT topics.

You are one of the funniest and sweetest people I have ever "met" and I think those who actually know you personally are very lucky!

I live in Wisconsin and was refferred to your blog (from a person who doesn't know you really either..) But I believe I started reading around last August. I feel terrible for not commenting until now because you are a BIG part of my life.

Until last year, I had only heard of the Mormoms as a cult. When I realized that YOU were Mormon, I decided to do a little research. I decided to contact the missionaries and when the came over and asked why I was interested, I told them I had a dear friend on the internet who introduced me... it was YOU! I took the discussions and got baptized!! I owe you a lot and appreciate your sincerity and optimism about EVERYTHING in life. My husband is also a big fan and reads daily and has even converted a few people at his work (not to the church, but to your blog!) if you went Private again, we would be very sad.

I have been meaning to comment forever (especially after my baptism) but I just feel overwhelmed about telling you how much you REALLY DO MEAN TO ME! Thank you for everything.

I will email you personally so we can keep in touch. (I don't have a blog, but would like to start one.)

Sorry for your loss. I'm Marcie (Mellor) Stevenson's little sis. That's how I found your blog. Growing up in your ward I always admired you and your amazing family and thought I'd check-in one day. I got hooked...it appears like so many others! I still admire you. You're an amazing writer and I always feel uplifted (or at the very least entertained) after I visit. After reading your posts I'm always contemplating on what type of wife I am and mother I'll be and qualities that you have that I'd like to emulate. Thanks for the lasagna invite, but I don't think I'll make it down. But it was still very generous...

wow janet, look at all those nice people who read your blog...makes me want to know who reads mine.
My grandmother passed away 2 1/2 years ago at the age of 89 (two weeks shy of 90) and she grew up in the south. She was a little racist too, only because she was raised to call people certain names. We tried to correct her, but you just can't tell your Grandma what to do, she doesn't appreciate it.

Jessica, that is a cool story. i am glad that you went to the source about wanting to know what a Mormon is. So many people get us confused with other religions and we are, overall, nice, normal everyday people.

Ok, are you serious on the 500 readers? HOOOOOOOOLY COW. Good thing I'm not a lurker or I'd be feeling pretty dang guilty right now. If you go private, make sure to invite Danny--because he reads it as faithfully as I do :)

Kristen said...

Five hundred hits! Holy cow! You are on your way to a famous blogger. Start charging for ad space or something - seriously. You could be the next dooce or Pioneer Woman.

And Jessica's story is awesome!

LOL Janet, you're a star! Everyone loves you, you can't disappoint your nation wide fans and audience!

Umm... I have commented before but I wanted to let you know I come at LEAST once a day because I too LOVE your blog! I have told some of my close friends about it, but I don't know if they have ever really come to read it, I just love it because you make me laugh and cry and happy and sad and you inpire me! Can I just say "Ditto" to everything Becky (used to be Mellor) said? I've already told you all that though! I use SiteMeter, not sure what you use because I haven't looked yet, but it shows me what the referring URLs are and where in the world people are that look at my blog... you can go to my blog and click on the link and get your own if you want! ;) You are inspiring and an incredible person! Jessica's story is amazing! Your blog is extraordinary! Love, ME :) Marie (Brewer) Belliston

Hi Janet, I don't usually comment because blogging gives me guilt. It's a time-sucker for me. I wanted to tell you about these two tools my sister's blog has from feedjit.com (you can see who is looking at your blog). There's a world map and a "real-time blog traffic feed" telling the city people live in and where they came from (which site linked them to your blog). It might be useful for you. Take care!

Brooke said...

So really... have you thought about advertising on your blog? I hear you can make some $$$ :)

Andrea said...

Dang girl! You're like a blog celebrity! Cool.

Michele said...

Hey- my name is Michele, you have no idea who I am but Becky (Mellor Doman)referred me to your page today and can I just say... you are an AMAZING blogger. Amazing! It seriously inspires me to want to be a better person just reading your stories. Thanks for being such a diligent writer! Your kids are very lucky to have you as their mom as well- you are great!

Danielle said...

Well, at least it seems like your stalkers are nice....the ones that comment anyway. Who wants to go private when they are a bloggin celebrity? 500 bloggin hits in one bloggin day...that's bloggin crazy...it looks like for you, privacy isn't the best policy...

Jeremy and Taren said...

Your blogs are just so popular. Everyone wants to read them but are too chicken to leave a comment. j/k. Sorry about Aaron's grandpa. Travel safe.

How in THE world so many people finding your blog? I never want to know who is looking at mine or I will become obsessed. It looks like some good comes from lurking at leaat!

I'm sorry about Aaron's grandpa. I hope you guys have a good visit with family - that's the one nice thing about funerals.

It looks like your threat worked. You didn't get 500 people to identify themselves, but at least you got a few more to come clean. And the story about Jessica - that's awesome! I don't think you really know how many lives you touch with your blog, Janet.

By the way, since we know you're not home, we probably won't go in your house, but we might go enjoy your trampoline.

Brandy-Blue said...

wow... 500 hits... i'm impressed! by the way, i'm really not stalking you... my computer dies every time i'm on it and several times when i'm reading your blog entries... so although it may appear that i am on your site for, oh 17 hours, i'm really just fed up with my computer and didn't bother turning it back on after shutting down while on your site... hope you have a good/safe weekend trip and enjoy celebrating the life of aaron's grandpa...

Janet I check in from time to time and enjoy reading your hilarious posts! You can always make me smile and I appreciate that. I am sorry about Aaron's Grandpa, but it sounds like he has lived a great life!

Janet, I'm happy so many people have come to know what a special person you are and what a great husband and 3 boys you have.
You came into my life two years ago last Mother's Day at a sad time in my life and you and your family have brightened it up more than you know.
I too can understand why so many people enjoy reading your blog as you are so talented and funny in describing your life. That's awesome that people are getting a new perspective about Mormons or members of the LDS church.
You will have a great reunion with extended family celebrating Grandpa Shumway's long life.

Sorry to hear about your loss. Dave and I are granparentless. I wish the kids could've known my granparents more. I guess they did in heaven before they came.

You are famous... I forgot you went public. It's a tough decision! I just have to say, you bring a smile to the faces of many. Hey, you make me laugh girl. I love your experiences. You should seriously write a book.

Hey Janet
I'm not great at keeping up my blog all the time or even checking others, but when I do get online I always check yours. I can see why you have so many fans. You really do have a way with honestly expressing your self. You are great with words, and it is real. That is what attracts people. In a world where everyone isn't always open and real that is a breath of fresh air. I know that through reading your blog and getting to know you better I know that I value your opinion. That makes me want to talk to you about things going on in my life that you've gone through.
You are great. Sorry about Grandpa Shumway. He sounds like a great man.

I feel SO guilty for not commenting.. not just this past week when you were out of town (when I am checking your blog every few hours to see if you've updated... even when I KNOW you said you're not coming back until Monday.) But I have felt bad for months for not saying hello and introducing myself. My name is Shayla and I am a mother of four boys. Every time I come on your blog I can relate to what you have to say and I just LOVE reading about your life. I really feel ashamed for being so addicted. I am so lame! But I just want you to know that you make me laugh and cry and want to be a better person. Thank you for sharing and allowing me to read!

ps. my husband reads faithfully too (you're the ONLY blog he likes!) and we always end up discussing your blog together. You have such a talent of relating to people!

becks said...

ps. can't wait to have you back in town! what day do you want to go to the pool? It's getting crazy hot!!

hope your trip went well.

becks said...

You are seriously my idol! I can totally see how you have influenced all these people and I know exactly why your blog gets so many hits. I have to read all the time even when I see you and hear what's going on face to face! You're such a spaz and so much fun!

And you have always been a MISSIONARY.. that's why you didn't have to serve a mission. You attract people and make them want to know more about the church without ever having to say anything about the church. It's amazing. How many people have you converted just by being YOU? I know it's not you, it's the truth that converts, but still. You are such a LIGHT to all those who know you (or read about you!) So glad to have you as my friend.

I haven't been commenting lately because I can't sign in. Why am I such an idiot with computers? Anyway, I have absolutely LOVED your last few posts. You are such an incredible, talented writer and I am not surprised that everyone else in the world thinks the same way I do. You have an ability to draw people in-- with your realism and your HUMOR. I almost peed my pants with the groceries because I have SO BEEN THERE! love you and your funny, real, honest stories.

I don't feel bad for not commenting though because you know I love you! (and I usually email you instead of commenting anyway!) can't wait to see a new post!

Yes! I win! I wondered where you were, I tried to call you yesterday. I should've checked your blog. 500 hits! Hello! Now I really want to talk to you, you blogging celebrity you. I knew you before you became famous and I have your phone number to prove it.

You seriously make me laugh with every post. Don't you love how popular you are! I loved reading the comment of the girl who converted. Pat yourself on the back for that one Sister Shumway.

I think I need to go back and read the comments, now you've got me intrigued... a convert in the comments, really?! Anyways, back again & I promise to comment more and not just laugh and move on. I'm glad the weekend went well, enjoy getting back to normal life!

Hey, I just found you today, and I love you already! You popped up because we both like Dan in Real Life... I clicked on your blog and the title of this post hit home, so I kept reading and don't want to stop! Then, I saw 'tennis' on your sidebar, clicked on it and saw Lleyton Hewitt on your blog and knew I was hooked... I LOVE him! And I don't want you to think I am a scary stocker chick, so here I am commenting on your blog! Looks like you are famous! Thanks for the entertainment!

I too like everyone else found your blog through a friend. She has tons of blogs listed on hers but I happened upon yours once and just like everyone else loved it! You're blog is so amazing and real. Sometimes reading blogs seems like a Christmas letter where everyone is trying to show their life as perfect and it's so intimidating. I love to see how "real" you are but still so inspiring. You seem like such a great mother and you are always having fun with your kids. I'm not trying to be a stalker...I can see why you get freaked out.

i had no idea you went public but i am glad you did (even though I was lucky enough to have an invite to your private blog). you can't keep entertainment like this hidden. your comments are so entertaining, too. you know a lot of cool people. i am so glad these are not comments on my blog, though, because i would feel too much pressure to keep coming up with fabulous material. but that is what great about you, Janet. this is not some show you are putting on for 500 people. you are just being you. Is any of this going to your head?
