the house is coming along quite nicely...

Paint on the walls makes such a difference and I am starting to feel the excitement about decorating/turning it into a home. But I don't like staying up until 2 am tossing and turning about what we're going to do and where we are going to put what. I need all the beauty sleep I can get!

We decided to hire a painter because Aaron thought it was my job to paint while he was at work. I think he forgot that I have three kids to take care of. We got a couple of quotes from professionals.. they were around $1500 to paint everything except the bedrooms. I figured that was a reasonable price for not having to do all the work. Then I got a painting referral from a friend (Hi Emily!) who blew our socks off with his painting fees. He quoted us $300 to paint our entire house. That's right people. We had to buy the paint, but he brought all his stuff, covered everything, painted for a couple of days and did an excellent job. I felt like I robbed him or something. We paid him a great tip and he almost wouldn't take it. If you live in Vegas and want to hire him.. let me know. I will give you his business card.

I need to take pictures of the rest of the house but my camera battery is dead. I do have pictures of the loft. It's empty, but we have big plans for it (as soon as we can afford what we want, that is.. it may be a couple of years :)

Before:

After:

I need something to put on this ledge going down the stairs.. something that will keep the kids from getting up there, but that won't break if it gets hit with a pillow (or another object) being thrown down the stairs.. I hate knick-knacks, but it definitely needs something. Help.

We still have yet to paint our bedroom, the guest bedroom or the kids toy room. I want to paint an entire wall in the toy room with the chalk board paint. Has anyone used it before? I am just waiting for my inspiration to come before I start.. Any fun, creative ideas?

oh-- and the green tint that I thought would stay in the carpet is COMPLETELY gone. I have asked friends to see if they can find it, and they can't. Is this a mini miracle or what? God is good to me.

I would have to say that a big FAKE plant on the ledge would be nice, it might get knocked around a bit, but it will never break.

The paint looks awesome! Your house looks HUGE! One step at a time and it will all be done....just in time to do it again in 10 years! :)

It is amazing what paint can do for a house! It looks really nice! As for what to put on the ledge, the only thing I can thing of is a fake plant too. If breaking wasn't an issue I would say get a big decorative vase and put some stuff in it, but I don't have boys (at least until January)....

Krista, I went to send you the painters number yesterday, but I don't know if I have your email address. I realize I could have called you, but I'm a loser.

We used Sherwin Willams Duration paint.. recommended by my email interior designer DEE. The color we chose for most of the walls is a neutral tan called Macadamia. For the darker accent walls, we used Umber. It's more expensive paint, but we figured we were getting a steal with the painter, we might as well use good stuff.

And he painted ALL the baseboards too.. it was SO very worth it!

And the house only looks big because it's empty. It's a decent sized home, but definitely not huge. It fits us well and will allow us to grow for a few more years.

Sorry... but I'm way to practical... and a bit mean!... I think a large plastic plant screams "DUST ME!!" But I'm always looking for a place for a large basket or other container for confiscating toys or items that are left laying around. It would mean having to retrieve them say once a month or so ... but maybe your kids are better about keeping up after themselves!!.. (can you tell I'm on a rampage today about picking up toys?)
Your house looks fantastic though!

Looks great Janet! I think a chalk board wall is a good idea. My brother has a chair rail up in his kitchen and has the bottom half painted with the chalk board paint. I would guess it isn't too hard because I have never heard him complain about it. Dave and I bought Andrew a wood table for Christmas and our plan is to tape of the top and paint it with the chalkboard paint. I saw it in the Parent's magazine and they said it was super easy!

I've seen the chalkboard paint framed out on a wall and I really liked the way that looked.
Here's my attempt at explaining that better:

Say, large rectangular wall paint matching rest of the room coming in about a foot or so on all sides until it hits molding (which you would have to install, caulk, and paint-really not that difficult) Inside that goes the chalkboard paint. Simple, looks intentional, and "frames" your children's artwork.

What about books standing in bookends on the ledge with a teeny little plant? Or a big cool bowl with the little balls made of sticks and stuff?

Hey! thank you for voting on my blog!!!

WOW! Love the before and after. The house looks fantastic. AND yes God is good to you... the paint all got out of the carpet, I would say that is a small miracle!

For the ledge I have to suggest a big decorative basket - maybe with some greenery around it. Or have you ever seen those big dried gourds? They look like ceramic pots, but are not as breakable and they look really nice (my sister has some)

I love the paint, and the chalkboard wall idea--I've been thinking about doing something like that as well.

As for the ledge--I'd probably do something seasonal, and swap it out every couple months for something new, maybe with a big fake plant, too.

Wow! It looks absolutely beautiful! I would give you decorating tips, but as I've been living in my house for 5 years and still have no decorations up to speak of (seriously...nada. My walls are completely bare), I hardly think I should be dishing out advice. I am the least domestic person I know...or have even heard of.

Love the color! Isn't it funny that paint makes such a difference? Can I be any more generic in my comments?

Paint can do wonders! I looks awesome. About the ledge - you should put some decorative pillows - that's all I can think that wouldn't break and kill someone if it fell. Good luck!
