The highlight of the weekend for my kids was NOT watching Conference, but rather a piece of paper they colored and named "the treat sheet."

As you can see, they drew pictures of every kind of candy, dessert, or TREAT they could think of. When one of them did something worthy of a reward, they got to pick out anything on the sheet and pretend to eat it. Amazing how three boys could spend hours carrying a piece of paper around the house, trying to find reasons to be rewarded.. Aaron and I would crack up every time one of the kids would exclaim, "Yum! That is SO good!" And of course, Zack had to switch up the game with saying that everything was YUCKY.. because it always got his brothers to giggle. As parents, we were happy that they not only kept themselves busy, but that they were able to eat so much JUNK without getting any cavities or going into a sugar-induced coma.
Highlights of the weekend for me:
- Meeting Kara's family. Kara is my cousin who is now a fellow Vegan-- (a person who lives in Vegas, not to be confused with someone who doesn't eat animal products.) I am so excited to have family in Vegas again!
- Going to dinner with my husband after the Priesthood session. A quiet meal without the kids is always a good thing.
- Not getting on the computer ONCE all weekend.
- Painting the dining room. I realize that I hired someone to paint it last week.. and it looked good, however, I wanted to add a little depth to the wall. I decided to sponge paint it to give it a bit of a fancier look. I didn't do any planning.. I figured I could paint over it, if I don't like it. But I think I do. Aaron is still deciding..
I didn't really take any before shots (when the wall was white--) but I took a break and grabbed my camera in the middle of the process.

and after--

I mixed three different colors in the sponge-- wanting to blend in the dark arch in the dining room. I painted for about 2 hours and probably used 1/2 gallon of paint total. A pretty simple job, really. (Well, only when your husband is occupying your kids with a long game of hide and seek!)
On the other side of the arch is our red couch. It was our first new furniture purchase for the house (or ever for that matter.) We both loved the painting too, even though it cost more than the couch. It's in our formal sitting room now, but we may move it up into the loft. We're just not sure, yet. For now, this is all that's in the room..

Well, it's a whole new week and I have to go take on the day! Zack woke up ready to save the world..

This is his reaction when I act surprised that HE was really underneath that mask. If only I could have gotten his response on video "It was me under that, mom! It was!"

How's that for a random weekend wrap-up?

not this cute anymore!

wow the first to comment. i'm rad.
i LOVE LOVE LOVE that painting. good purchase. your painting job turned out great. so creative. glad you had a good conference weekend. we LOVED it too.
Your dining room looks great! Here's my two cents, because I'm the queen of spur of the moment home improvements, so take it or leave it. What about spray painting the chandelier black or dark brown?
Wish my kids were as occupied with treat pictures are yours were. They mostly cried, yelled, hit, and beat on each other until I put the younger two down for a nap.
the chandelier will definitely be dark.. someday. With all the extra money we have lately, we will barely be able to replace the light bulbs.. but spray painting it until we can afford a new one is a great idea!
Janet, Please Help! I am still a blogging novice and I don't know how to create a Link that says Click "HERE" that will redirect... I see the whole link and it is bugging me.
Thanks, you are the best!
I too love the paint, the red couch, and the painting. So simple yet elegant.
Conference was awesome!!! We are so lucky to have that quidance every 6 months!
Happy Monday!
I love what you did in the dining room, Janet. And I'm so glad that you were happy with Jeff. Isn't it amazing what a little paint does for your house?
You mentioned buying something for your nitch down the stairs. I don't know if someone has already told you about Home Goods. It is my favorite store. It's like Ross for your house. I hope you can find what you want. Your house is really coming together. It looks great!
Wow, your dining room seriously looks great. Very elegant.
I LOVE the treat page, that is way too funny. I wish my kids would be content with being rewarded with a scrumptious, 2-dimensional treat created from crayons. Hmmm...maybe they would be. I may have to show them this blog post.
Loved conference. Actually recorded it on the DVR so I can watch my favorite talks again.
Cute idea with the candy paper. My kids were going crazy during conference and that would've been smart, although I think they'd prefer real candy.
Love the paint job! You are amazingly talented. I don't have the patience for painting. Dave had a paint business when we were first married, so he tried to teach me a thing or to, but I didn't listen and messed up my kitchen. I am sure he'll be touching it up soon.
I love the finish in the dining room. I am usually one to see that and think, what were they thinking, but with those colors, espescially in a dining room, it looks great!
Who's idea was the treat sheet? Yours or the boys? I'm wondering if it could work in our house. I think it's fantastic! Never underestimate the power of imagination. One of my brothers used to go mad when my dad stole an imaginary watch from him!
The dining room looks great. Wish I lived near enough to hire that painter too!
YOur boys are so creative. I love the paint in the dinning area. I'll come over sometime this week to check it out.
Nice job on the walls! Very classy. I too enjoyed conference. I can never decide which is my favorite talk. Sam
Hi Janet. I think your room looks great. It is amazing what a little paint does to a room. How wonderful to have a new home for the holidays! :-)

the house is looking fabulous! i can't wait to see it in person!!
So....nice weekend and stuff...and I think you are having fun decorating your house. Not that there's anything wrong with that...
good job jan! see you can do it! way to let your creativity come out. like your picture above the red couch too. i couldn't agree more with how fast conference goes by!
Ruthie--We didn't know about the treat sheet until it was finished... but we were lucky enough to try a few of the goodies. I had so many that I finally had to tell them to stop asking me because my tummy hurt.
Dee-- I am not afraid to admit that I am having fun. It's still a pain in the butt, but it aint SO bad.
Look at you getting all fancy smancy :) The wall looks great!
I agree with Emily. Home Goods is a awesome store to get stuff for the house. It's one of my favorites
I can't believe what a coat of paint will do. Awesome! I LOVE the red couch and painting. And I think it's so funny the painting cost more than the couch. Gotta love it.
Your kid's picture of sweets is so funny. Growing up, my mom would let us eat all the candy from our 72 hour kits during conference. You gotta do your job and help rotate the food storage, ya know. :) We had a lot of kids so it make for tons of candy! Mmm. While my kids are young, though, I'd prefer they just draw treats. Ha ha.
I love little Spidey. He has such a cute face!
and the paint looks awesome. I want to see more of your house, but I know you told us we'd have to wait years. what about the dark couches?
the treat sheet is genius!
