three things I learned at the gym...

Last night I had my first official workout since Simon was born. Nine weeks is longer than I've waited with the others, but 4 kids has done a NUMBER on me. I typically enjoy working out in the mornings (the BEST time of day) but mornings are no good when you don't sleep well. So at 9 pm, when Aaron arrived home from work, I packed my things and headed solo to the gym. While there, I learned three things. Actually, I believe I knew all these things before going to the gym, but they were SOLIDIFIED during my workout.

#1. I have absolutely zero fashion sense. I've known for years that the gym is a meat-market for the shallow single people. Girls love to do their hair pretty and wear make-up so they can look hot while sweating it off. I have no issues with this. But the outfits the women were (not) wearing seriously threw me for a loop! Not a single girl I saw had a shirt on. I didn't get the memo that sports bras with little straps (one size too small) were the new trend. I actually thought about taking my baggy t-shirt off so I could blend in. And whatever happened to the old pair of cut-off sweats-shorts? Did they go out of style with leg warmers and blue eyeshadow? Apparently so. My elliptical machine was directly behind a young woman who wore TIGHT see-through leggings. I kid you not. I could clearly see her black pair of thong underwear as though she were wearing no leggings at all. Did she KNOW her shorts were transparent? Should I tell her I can see her naked butt? I asked myself that very question the entire 28 minutes I was behind her behind.

#2. I have absolutely zero interior decorating skills. again, I thought I knew this before I arrived, but now I am 100% certain. As I tried to steer my eyes away from Miss Thong-Butt, I found myself interested in the HGTV channel on the flat screen to my left. I watched as a couple went through their home with an interior designer. They did a panoramic view of every room in the house. But without the sound from the television, I literally COULD NOT decipher if the house was in the BEFORE or AFTER stage of the remodel. If it was BEFORE, every room should be a disgrace. But I didn't notice any problems. The living area had funky green chairs and a mismatching shag rug. The white drapes in the bedroom looked vintage and expensive. The bathroom had cool blue and green checkered tile on the walls. Was this a good or a bad thing???? I did not know. If it was AFTER an amazingly expensive remodel, it should have knocked my socks off. But my socks remained on. I am dead serious, people. I've GOT to know if floral wallpaper is IN or OUT. If it's out, I think it should come back in.

#3 Lady Gaga is insanely groovy. It doesn't matter what song she's singing, it will make you get your groove on. I liked her before my workout, but now I am in love. I realize she's a bit... odd (she was probably the inspiration behind the invisible workout pants) but one cannot listen to Bad Romance without moving. What is it about nonsense words and a funky beat that makes you want to take it up 5 notches? Rah-rah-ah-ah-ah. Roma, roma-ma, Ga-ga, ooh la la..... this Lady brings out the freak in me. and I rather like it.

ps. I love (and appreciate) the circumcision discussion below. Please don't let this nonsense-of-a-post distract you from commenting on a more serious subject. I'm getting closer to a decision but still praying about it. more on that later.

pps. Simon is two months old today. no need for cake/balloons/pictures, but I think it's worth mentioning. We can all thank him for this post written at 4 am. Babies can be so fussy sometimes.

hahaha... Janet, I wish I knew you in person because you are insanely hilarious!!! I think we would have made awesome gym buddies. (ps.. i love dancing to Lady Gaga while I do my house cleaning... it makes it much more fun!)

This cracked me up. You need to go in the morning or during the day. There's more SAHM's there with their shirts on. And I love Lady Gaga too! Since joining the gym, I've also discovered that I like Brittney Spears (gag!). Every time they play that Womanizer song I say "Yes!" do a little fist pump, and totally rock out on the elliptical.

I'll have to turn this on with my Wii Fit- my new answer to working out- it's energizing.

Sonia-- I'm am not insanely hilarious in person. I am basically shy and awkward...

Jane-- I am so looking forward to going with you during the day. You and I have the same kind of fashion sense. (I am not saying you don't have any either) just saying that you wear a shirt. and I could totally picture you doing a pump fist and then getting to business.

Em-- if only we were meeting bright and early at Sara's fitness center. Then the only distractions we would have during our workouts would be that old guy who wore the same jeans everyday on the treadmill.

You and I are one in the same baby! I take true pride in my complete lack of fashion and interior decorating sense. I'm just happy to hear I'm not alone. As for Lady Gaga... ah well... I like her as long as I can separate her creepy public appearances from her music.

Janet you would be perfect gym buddies with Suzanne...although i think I have spent 600 bucks last year alone on new work out outfits for her!

From a man point of view I'm not overly offended that the sweats and t shirt look is no longer in style...if you have to be stuck on some elliptical machine then....well I'm going to shut up before I get in trouble!

P.S. Circumcise!!!!

I have to agree about Lady Gaga. She is amazing and makes me want to run my socks off.
Since you are back into the working out. How about doing a half marathon this year? Your legs are twice as long as mine but I think we should try it.
I don't think I even own a pair of leggings. Good thing I don't go to the gym.

I LOVED this post (but then again I love everything you write.) I do not have a gym membership nor a decorating sense. I am in trouble when we move to a new place in Vegas. We are coming and I am having your boys over to keep my kids enertained while I unpack. I wanted to get a gym membership when Cole got a job but now I am reconsidering. Oh, lst year I did see a Khols ad for leg warmers.

Kristi-- when is the big move? What area of Vegas will you be living?

I will be happy to send my kids over while you unpack :) I need them outta my hair!!

hey i remember a while back seeing a picture on here of your newly decorated nursery or boys room? anyway, it looked awesome, so you DO have interior decorating skills!

NO type of wallpaper is in style. I do see some designers on the HGTV use a textured one on one wall once in a while- but it always neutral. Paint is so much easier to change!

Sarah-- many professionals would say that my nursery is proof that I don't have skills..

Mandy-- I completely disagree when it comes to wallpaper. But we can still be friends because your profile picture is HOT.

I have been lucky enough to join the Zumba class at the Y with all the other moms in their husbands old t-shirts and their old sweats from about 10 years ago...ok, so thats just me, but the Y is so not a meat market and thats one reason why I like it so much.
Also, Lady Gaga is AWESOME! Matt hates her music but I love it...along with a few of Britney Spears songs that just get me moving. Brinley has heard a few of Lady G's songs and her version of "papa-papa roxy" is so much cuter...and kinda funny.
As for your decorating skillz. I haven't got much either. I am painting my kitchen cabinets Turquiose and it now has a chalk board wall, too. Who cares! As long as you like it, right?

I miss the Y in Spokane so much! The classes were awesome and I always felt RIGHT at home... My boys really miss the waterslide too.

I can't wait to see pictures of your turquoise cabinents! Rock on! I'll be singing papa roxy for the rest of the night....

LVAC has been quite the experience for me, as well. I'm in the process of doing my own post about it.
The first thing I re-learned is that everyone gets naked in the locker room. I'd join the ranks, but think I'd get some odd looks from my choice of underclothing. :)
We should definitely go together in the next couple of days while I still can! And make Jane go too so this mommy trio can laugh at all the sexy non-mamas around us.

I thought I commented on this earlier.. hmm.

You are flipping hilarious! I think I burst out laughing about seven times while reading it. I can totally picture you at the gym rocking out to Lady GG.

oh, and yes, the flirting going on at the gym with all the makeup is pretty sad and funny to watch.
