Our boys' bathroom has two sinks. One is spotless. The other has the worst hard water stains.. I have tried scrubbing with everything imaginable and I can't seem to even scratch the surface. Anyone have any suggestions?

If you share your dirty secrets, I'll share mine.. Zack is the ULTIMATE mess-maker. You name it, he's done it. His favorite destructo tool is the permanent marker. A few years ago, I came across a product called GOOF OFF and it's the radicalist. All you need is a quarter size drop of this stuff on a paper towel and the permanent marker ain't permanent anymore. It wipes right off anything: computer screens, telephones, remote controls, TVs, printers, cameras, windows, tables, lamp shades, walls. I feel so ashamed to admit that this is the short list of things we've scrubbed with Goof Off. Even still, I think I've used 1/10 of the bottle. Be really careful when touching the walls or tables with it, if you apply too much to the paper towel, it will take off the paint and or finish on your table. Oh, and it's smells SO strong.. you can totally get high off that stuff. Maybe that's been Zack's problem all along.. the dude has inhaled too much Goof Off. Makes sense to me.
Any phenomenal cleaning tips you have up your sleeve? Please do share-- even if they don't have anything to do with hard water stains or permanent marker masterpieces..
ps. As I am typing this, Zack is marching around saying, "911. 911. I need you! No one will help me clean up my toys!"

not this cute anymore!

For the hard water stains (trust me, we have the worst hard water stains) use super fine sandpaper with some dish soap and warm water.
Sandpaper.. I would have never thought of that. I got the best scrubbing pads and they did nothing. Thank you so much for your suggestion! Off to clean a sink!
oh, and Hi! Nice to meet you :)
I use a cleaner called 'bar keepers friend' amazing on the hard water on ceramics!
The Works is pretty much magical. You can buy it at the dollar store (or the grocery store). I discovered it when I was looking for something to remove the ring in our toilet. Seriously, I'd scrubbed it with everything I could imagine, to no avail. I poured The Works in, it made a fizzing sound, and the ring was gone. I didn't even have to scrub it. That is my kind of cleaning. They make a toilet one, and a shower one. I don't know what the difference is, I'd probably try the shower one before the toilet one, but seriously, give it a shot. Good luck.
Just discovered Magic Eraser and it is my ally against my Devil-spawn 2-year-old. It also doesn't stink like Goof Off, which works awesome, I agree.
Love Spot Shot for carpet messes...blood, grease, hot sauce, poop.
Nail polish remover takes pen ink out of clothes.
that's all i can think of but i will check back for other people's gems.
have you tried steel wool on your sinks? I use it on mine and its fabulous... I am not worried about a few scratches if it takes out the stains.
I've used my fair share of magic erasers and for some reason they weren't magical enough for me. Maybe I enjoy getting high off the goof off fumes??
All these comments are making me want to clean tonight instead of get the much needed rest...
Similar to the sand paper - we use a pumice stone (you know the funky rock you use to smooth the bottom of your feet) and that works well too.
I love Barkeeper's Friend on pots and pans. Pumice Stone is what works for me for sinks and toilet stains--removes rust stains too.
Did you try the magic erasers on this hard water? I just did a whole shower with hard water and it came off effortlessly! Good luck!
I have no great ideas! But, I did notice your emoticon and wanted to tell you I LOVE it!
The Works and Barkeeper's Friend are both awesome. And my mom always used hairspray to get permanent marker out of things (apparently a few of her children- maybe me, maybe not- repeatedly thought her organ and piano could use some decoration, not to mention the walls and couches).
When I was working as a housecleaner, I learned the magic of white vinegar, baking soda and lemon juice as cleaning agents. I use white vinegar on a toothbrush to clean grout and baseboards and caulkin; baking soda made into a paste with water makes a great abrasive agent that won't scratch most surfaces; and well, we all know what happens when you mix the two together, which makes the combo great for slow drains (let it sit for about five minutes and then pour boiling water on it, followed by the hottest water you can get out of your tap). Lemons have natural antibacterial properties and the citric acid cuts through a lot of gunk. And, they're all deodorizers.
And now I will shut up.
Vinegar and scrubbing....works pretty well.
I love vinegar and use it for a lot of things.. but it didn't do anything for THIS kind of hard water stain.
I've heard Alka Seltzer is great at removing hard water stains and rust rings in toilets- maybe it would work on this?
CLR
My mom told me to use the dull part of a butter knife and it totally works. I get hard water stains around my faucets and in my toilets and that's how I get rid of them (don't worry, I wear gloves to work on the toilets!) You just have to gently work on it, but they go away really fast. However, I like the sandpaper idea. I'm going to try that next time to see if it works...I have to get the hard water stains out every 6 months or so. Blech.
so...did it work? is your stain gone? my father in law makes this concoction and it's AWESOME!
Dollar store dish soap (like dawn)
amonia
water
mix a third of each together. It's amazing and it doesn't stink real bad.
he refurbishes old washers and dryers and it's the only thing that cleans the grease and crud.
