This photo has been emailed to me almost as many times as the General Conference activity packet for kids! Mormons know how to forward emails, don't we? If only you could count your VT with a forwarded email.. in fact, we could make everything electronic. I'll listen to my scriptures on my ipod.. who actually wants to read anymore? And someone should invent a Wii game where we pretend to make dinner and take it over to our neighbor, it'd practically be the real thing, no? I realize that online temple sessions are out of the question, but possibly Sacrament meeting? And I'd really love to pay tithing with a direct withdrawal from our bank account each month.. seriously who fills out forms or writes checks anymore! I know the LDS Church has major resources.. Why can't they make things a little easier on us?ok-- I got a little carried away there. I wanted to start a discussion about this picture and somehow got off subject for a minute. Do you think this is really a picture of Joseph Smith at age 34? If you haven't received it already, the email states the following:
The LDS Church is authenticating this picture, but they are fairly sure that this is a true picture of Joseph Smith around the time that he was in/or released from Liberty Jail. It may be the only reported daguerreotype ever made of the Prophet and was buried in the archives of the RLDS Church until they recently found it and released it.

not this cute anymore!

I think it's legit. It totally looks like him.
In a way, I hope it isn't. Because I would feel totally guilty thinking our prophet has beautiful eyes.
I have no idea, but it looks a bit different than all the other pics of him. And why are you so popular? This is the first I've seen of this email! :) you know I'm kidding
I have no idea if the picture is real, but I am all on board for having tithing automatically debited from the checking account. Or if we could set up "LDS church" on the online bill pay, that would work too!

Sorry I'm making so many coments, but I just have to TOTALLY agree with Jenna. All kidding aside, I have thought to myself a million times that it would be so nice if we could have tithing automatically debited somehow. :-)
The tithing thing is such a great idea. I've never thought of that before. I also got this email. I'm skeptical because this guy looks a lot younger than 34. I would say he's in his early twenties.
I don't know as far as the photograph goes, if it is then great, if not-oh well. I guess I just see it as one of those un-important things...This photograph does not influence my personal feelings of the Prophet Joseph's life...it's just one of those superficial things... (sorry, I hope that doesn't sound harsh or rude?)
Hmmm, the online sacrament meeting sounds kinda up my alley (that's a horrible thing to say isn't it?)...
Tithing through direct deposit is the greatest idea ever, who do we have to talk to about his?
wierd... if that is joseph smith, i totally didn't imagine him looking like that. i guess i'm used to all the actors the church uses. the direct deposit tithing sounds convenient, but i think our kids can learn alot from actually seeing us physically pass our tithes over to the correct priesthood authority, rather than from putting it in a machine... :)
you are too funny about the VT over email and the direct deposit tithing. i seriously LOVE your sense of humor.
and I loved your testimony too. thanks for sharing.
as far as the picture of the prophet--- I think it's real. although he does look small in the shoulders for someone who did so much physical labor. possibly it is when he is younger.
Love your testimony. Loved Conference.
Sorry everyone, but I doubt they'll set up direct-debit tithing. It kind of interferes with the whole free agency thing. I'm pretty sure we're supposed to make a conscious choice to pay our tithing every time, not set it up and then let the Church think about it for us. It would be so convenient, though, wouldn't it?
I don't know if that's a real photo of Joseph Smith, but I hope for his sake it is. This guy is much better-looking than all the depictions of him thus far. Go, Emma! And yes, feel free to step away as the lightning strikes me.
thanks for sharing your testimoney Janet. After pulling out my RS manual I can see this being a real picture of the prophet. his face looks slimmer?(stress, malnutrition). the crooked nose, chin, bushy eyebrows, even his hair line all look exact. His hair is parted on the wrong side. I would have thought his hair color to appear lighter? It is in black and white.... lov ya
OK, maybe not direct debit from your account because yes, it needs to be a choice that we all consciously (sp?) make. But I am all for the bill pay set up! With bill pay you get to choose the date and the amount it gets sent.... no check! no licking the envelope!
That's funny about the forwarded conference packet and this picture. I have received it several times as well. I am not sure what I think about the picture. I just decided that it is not him until the church comes out and officially says it is.
I'm out of it. I didn't get the emails. Wouldn't it be great though... who needs meetings anymore?? Can't we do it all through email? Fast offerings and tithing... direct deposit baby! I'm with you on conference. Loved it and President Monson.
I'm such a skeptic. That pictures isn't Joseph Smith until it's been authenticated. What's the source of this picture? And I have to agree on wanting church to be more automated. However, I'm sure I would see fewer blessings from it. Sometimes writing that tithing check really hurts, but I do it in faith. I certainly don't want to deny myself the blessings that come from writing THAT check. :)
So that picture is totally different from the one I saw online a couple days ago. KSL was talking about it on the radio so Damion did a google search and found the picture- but it is not even close to the one you posted- Weird! The one I saw can be viewed at http://comevisit.com/lds/js3photo.htm.
I figure that I'll just wait and hear what the church officials have to say about it. :)
thanks for your testimony. loved your thoughts on conference. i am also glad you got so much out of it, your boys must be really good.
That's funny--I saw this on the local news, and they said that the church DIDN'T back up this picture as being legit. Maybe I was starved for sleep and misinterpreted it?? Could be. It does look like Joseph Smith though...
