Opportunity Avenue

I am very pleased with our new home, despite my earlier complaints of having to paint and decorate. The house fits us well, and we are thrilled to finally have a place to call home. After 9 moves (in 8 years of marriage) we are ready to settle down and unpack our boxes.

I don't think I was very picky while shopping for a house- but I did have three main things that I was looking for...

#1-- a laundry room on the same floor as the bedrooms. CHECK. No more hauling laundry up and down the stairs. Hallelujah.

#2-- a killer pantry.. HALF a CHECK. My kitchen is wonderful, but my pantry is just okay. Without a basement for food storage, we are going to have to be creative with where we keep our 2,000 pounds of wheat.

And #3-- a radical street name. No CHECK at all. I am not unhappy with our new address, but it's nothing special. I drove my husband nuts when I wanted to hear the street name before knowing how many bedrooms the house had. But it could have turned out much worse. We drove by a few houses where I said, "I don't care if it's a palace inside, I will NOT live on that street." (For example: Elkalaka Road, Black Wash Way, Heavy Gorge Ave, Klamath Ct, or Sankaty Circle.) I just don't want to be spitting in someone's face every time I give them my address, let alone explain that I don't live in a circle with a bunch of skanks.

On the other hand, there were several homes that I would have LOVED to purchase solely looking at the address. I would even consider pitching a tent in between a couple of homes on some of these streets. My favorites were:

Kindness Crest, Friendly Court, or Amigo Cir
(I know I would just love my neighbors)

Scholar St
(great for homeschooling brainiac boys)

Liberation Dr

Heavenly View Dr

Mako Point

Oasis Cir

Real Quiet St
(where your neighbors aren't just quiet, they're REAL quiet)

Dream Valley St

Opportunity Ave

Longevity Dr

Elite Street

Lovett Dr

Goddess Way

I was really disappointed there wasn't a single house for sale on Goddess Way, but I'm sure if I lived there, I wouldn't want to move either. Those address labels would have been awesome.

Our kids had fun house shopping with us, too. There were several street names that they loved. For instance: Abracadabra Ave, Scorpion Ct, Safari Creek Dr, Shoot Out Pl, Crocodile Ave, Meteor Shower St, Tortoise Ct, Marco Polo Ave. How easy would it be for a little kid to remember their address when they lived on Abracadabra Ave? Spelling it would be a challenge, though.

Anyway, I guess our address is so-so. It's not repulsive, but it's not anything to brag about. It still has to be spelled out for the operator and that's a bummer. What I really want to know is WHO comes up the street names? If you think the ones listed above are made up, you are wrong. They are ALL actual street names in Vegas.. (they could have been worse, living in Sin City and all...) Do you agree with me that a street name is a deciding factor in purchasing a house or do you side with my husband who ignores me when I tell him that we would be so much happier living on Liberation Drive? Do you actually care what your address is?

ps. If you didn't get an email with our updated info, then we must not love you
(or we don't have your current email address)

I finally skimmed through your last couple weeks of life, since I've been MIA in the blogging world. Oh, how we've all missed you!
I agree that a street name matters, unless the house is too perfect. In my mind it's of less importance than yard size, floorplan, # of beds and baths, etc. BUT I definitely would look around more if I found out the street name was horrible.
You've gotta love Vegas street names.

Periodically I skim through Real Estate websites and I was actually thinking along the same thoughts the other day when one of the street names just seemed weird. Now I cannot remember what it was... I like our street name, seems quite patriotic!! (Liberty) Congrats on finally getting in to the house : ) Sam

After 10 years living with out a street name (just boring Utah street coordinates) I am just getting used to real street name. I guess the biggest factor is if it requires spelling when given over the phone. I think my street name is pretty simple (Plymouth Woods Drive), but I am amazed at the number of friendly customer service reps that can't figure it out. Alas, what can you do. Congrats on your new home by the way. We are so excited for you.

2,000 lbs of wheat? oh man i need to get on my food storage. The power went out the other night and i had to run to the store for a candle and a light. I would be so unprepared if we had any sort of disaster.

i lived on luck spring drive once. It turned out i was super lucky to get out of the place when i did!

Okay so i like the orange the best as well and i am hoping that it looks fabulous! SO excited your flying in for the wedding! I need you there!

And one more thing i have info about the ceremony... looks like it will be at sundance after all. Happy day! can't wait! i'll give you details later.
Love YA

Oh, the street name really is a deciding factor. In fact I chose our lot because of the street name. My best guy friend all through high school and beyond used to call me Dutchess. And wouldn't you know it, I built my house on Duchess Street. I love it and wish I would never have to move (which won't be possible if I ever have another child.)

I grew up on Lucky Clover Dr.- how cool is that!? I always thought it was VERY neat! Street name is a factor, but I'm with Natalie, other things come first for me. I mean who wouldn't just love to live on Marmo Ave.? (It sounds like a drunken version of Mormon)

Just Google Torino....fast Ford muscle car before your time, of course. Could be worse. There's a street in Holbrook, AZ named Bucket of Blood Street...old west shoot out...lovely thought. Good for Halloween.
...smile!

Liberty is a keeper. We lived on Willow in Spokane and I thought I liked it until my husband started screeching, "WILLLLLOOOOWW" trying to impersonate some ferret/goat thing in the movie Willow. (you know that one with the midget.) After that, I just dreaded hitting our street sign because I knew it was coming (and eventually, even when he wasn't in the car I would do it in my head. UGH!)

And DUTCHESS is sweet. That is almost as good as Goddess. Just don't have any more kids, Sheri. Don't sacrifice your street name!

Marmo reminds me of Marshmallows every time I drive by it.

And I am not exactly sure if we have 2,000 pounds of wheat, but after moving it, it seems like that much.

Bucket of BLOOD? Can you imagine having address labels with that? Sad.

I almost posted a picture of a street sign called "BROOMRAPE" but it's not in Vegas, so I didn't. You can google it and that's it for real. Seirously-- who names these? And how can I sign up to be in charge?

My dad worked for the developer of our neighboorhood and that's why there is a Mandy Circle. Totally awesome! So the developer is the one who makes up the name. My sister lives on Flintlock Way. All of her street names are based on guns or gun parts. When I heard her street name I cringed! I totally think you have to have street names in concideration. And, thanks for loving me enough to have my email address.

janet said...

Having a street named after you is the ULTIMATE.

And for some reason, Mandy, I have your email address, but not Kelly's. Will you send it to me?

Mandy said...

email me again because I'm at work so I can reply. Once I look at it at home it goes into oblivion.

OK...so you could always move to Shumway, AZ and live on Shumway Road...that might be overkill. Aaron could set up practice in Shumway and when Ben becomes a lawyer then it's Shumway and Shumway on Shumway Road in Shumway, AZ...eeegads!! Would shumone please stop me??!!

I just signed up for information on Direct Buy (furniture,etc.). I'm including the web link:
http://www.dbpricing.com/?s=UT_425_Org_162004838

I need to get back to work....

janet said...

I would much rather live on Janet street than Shumway street.. not that it's a bad name or anything. But, I don't really like my name anyway, so I am back to Goddess.

And just so you know, MIL, if I happen to spend the day ordering from Direct Buy, then it's all your fault! Aaron can't get mad at me if his mom made me to it! Now get back to work!

I would rather have grass in my backyard than live on "Opportunity Avenue". So you don't live in a circle with a bunch of skanks?

janet said...

Oh, we still live by Skanks alright, but at least our address doesn't announce it to the world.

And grass in your backyard is totally overrated. I would MUCH rather have dirt and rocks. How many people could say that they have a 50 ft sandbox?

We live on Aquhorthies Circle. Try to say that five times fast.
British place names are very romantic, lost of people name their houses! We used to live at Knavenside.

The Vegas street names really are interesting. My sister lives on Acclamation, and the streets around her are Lovingly, Adoration, etc. I guess you are really supposed to love your neighbors??
Congrats on the new house!!

Yay! thanks for the addy update! Put your bedframe on cinder blocks... then put your wheat under your bed... Well, it is best to do that under the kids beds... that way they don't have room to shove their junk under it...

Have fun decorating!
Kim

I totally agree. I asked Dave that all the time when we were looking at houses. That's one reason, Utah doesn't jive with me. Everyone all right not everyone, but most people have just numbers. Boo!!!

janet said...

Kell- I would probably take numbers over Leaping Deer. That should have been on my worst of list.

HayHay said...

ohh I love Goddess way one also! I'm going to have to check out the street names when we go to Arkasas next week. You'll have to keep us posted on the decorating. It looks roomy. That is exciting.
Are you in a new ward where you are? If you are are you bumbed about it or glad? You had a lot of friends in your old ward. Was it hard to move away from friends?

When we were first looking for houses, we found a great house with everything we wanted in a nice neighborhood etc. The only problem? It was on Quilted Bear Street. Rick looked at me and said in all sincerity "Jane. I just don't think I can live on Quilted Bear Street." So alas...we kept on a lookin. Rick actually had a job a long time ago where he had to name streets in Minnesota. He had to name them in alphabetical order by flower and tree names. Crazy! I don't know what the rules are in Vegas for street naming, but I swear that whoever is doing the naming in some of the neighborhoods either have a twisted sense of humor, or are on drugs. :-)

Street names obviously don't do much for us--we live on Forker Rd. (My SIL had a fit when she first heard it--couldn't stop laughing). In a way, the more horrible the better, because at least it is interesting, no?

PS--Brandon and I did Direct Buy and thought it was a rip-off in the end! Unless you are way big on planning ahead (and I'm talking like, six months from now I might want this sofa) I'd think twice. Maybe it just isn't for us! (Plus, I like to be able to see things in person before I buy, and I have to be able to return if they are not up to snuff!)

janet said...

Lindsay- Forker is much better than PORKER... and your house is SO beautiful I would live it in no matter what the street name was. Check it out people. They built it themselves!!

look at this house!

and now with grass!

by the way, Linds, did Aaron ever get back with Brandon about river rafting? We really need to be neighbors again! We really miss you guys!!

It's been awhile since I've visited your blog - but it's fun to be back! Within two seconds, I was laughing, and that's what I love the most. I never thought about street names when buying our homes, but once we did find this one, I did notice and love the name (Sunflower Lane). Our first house in Everett was just numbers, so that's kind of boring. I do drive by a lot of streets that I would not want to live on (there are a lot of old people names used for streets here). I'm glad you are happy with your new house. Be happy with ANY pantry because I have none. (but I do have a food storage room in the basement, so we take what we can get, right?) Really funny stuff about your bro and Father in Law.

Don't do Direct Buy!!!!!!!!!!! It took us 4 months to get a L.R. recliner. . . and then I saw the exact chair at Costco--but in leather--for HALF the price. (It was 100 bux to ship it to their warehouse, so after all that waiting we still had to pick it up and haul it home to Vercler *ugh* Road!) They're nice before you join, but there's no customer service once you've paid the big joiner fee.
