1970 called. They want their laundry room back.

What were you doing this morning at 1am? I was painting mustard, orange and green stripes in my laundry room. I think it turned out great, but I forgot to ask my husband's opinion before I started. Oh well, I figured if he doesn't spend any time in the room, then he doesn't have a say on how it's painted. Word.

Before..
just plain ol' boring white.

During..
quite the mess. especially after I stepped on a paintbrush on the ground.
yes, I mixed colors again. I wanted the mustard less mustardy..
so I lighted it up a bit in a bucket. ALL of these colors were on the clearance (miss-matched) isle at Walmart. I think the whole project was about $15... including the 3 rolls of tape used.
Suh-weet.

Keeping the kids busy.
Homeschooling=slave labor.

The final product

so many busy pictures.. I tried to get it from all angles.

Pictured is my shoe organizer on the back of the door. I love this.. it keeps my super glue, exacto knife, batteries, balloons, etc out of reach. the laundry room is the best place for all these odds and ends (in my opinion :) So far the kids (especially ZACK) have stayed away from it... *knocking on wood*

I still have a few touch ups on the ceiling.. but not bad for a one day project. And here's a shout out to my friend, Natalie, who was a huge help! She stayed late while our husbands went to play basketball together. It's always fun to have company especially at 11 pm when our kids were crying and roaming the house naked!

PS. Today The Twins Turn TEN!

I can't believe it's already been ten years! I still remember the day you were born.. I was telling everyone on campus at Ricks College that I was an aunt to twins! A boy and a girl.. who are still the best of friends. We sure do love you Cole and Corah!

How fun is that! Can I commission a Janet-designed room some day when we own a house?

Oh, I LOVE it ... great idea to mix all those colors together. They're my favorites!

I painted my daughter's room in stripes, but used similar blues. I'll send you a picture one of these days (and no, I didn't forget about you ... ).

So I didn't go to bed last night til 3am and this morning I've been trying unsuccessfully to tell the sun to go back down so I can send everyone to bed and then I read this blog!! I'm awake, I'm jealous, I'm inspired, I'm in awe and I'm so excited to try something similar in the kids playroom!! WOW!! Where do your ideas come from.... really are they just falling out of your head or did you find a great decorating resource?? I've been in my house 1 1/2 years and have been living at the library pouring over decorating books trying to find the right ideas for the rooms in my house... I've only done the living room, dining room and 1 bathroom... maybe I should just dive in instead of spending so much time researching... seriously I have at least 10 books checked out at a time on design and decorating...
Now the tired is coming back I'm having to retype every word so it isn't a jumbled mess and I'm rambling on about ... I can't remember anymore... it's not your fault I didn't sleep and I'm not coherent .. you're just one of my first victims since you blogged and Valerie waltzed in here saying Oh yeah, she blogged and I already commented.. so I took the challenge.. I'm sure all who swing by here and LOVE your new laundry room, and they all will, will be wishing I'd gone to bed and would just shut up... Happy laundering!

novidiac said...

yes me again... I just want to clarify that by 'Happy Laundering', I'm not endorsing the money pilfering kind.... in case you wondered... I'm sure you didn't... and now you know... without a doubt... about a few things... including, that I'm completely mad...

You are going to have so much fun doing laundry. I love it. I wish I could have seen Aaron's face when he saw it. I can only imagine. Thanks for the long post about the twins. I started crying when I read your comment. I had forgotten about Corah crying when she saw pictures of them. OK I need help. In Photoscape, when I save my pages at 300% it is not working. What am I doing wrong? I'm sorry I always need your help.

That looks great! I love the stripes idea...and I had never thought about painting a laundry room...but COOL!

i can't believe the twins are 10! wow. we had their photos up in our room at ricks. i learned so much about your family during those years, especially kristy and her family, and deb, and lori, ok pretty much everyone.
your laundry room looks fun. good job. i use gain too!

Wow Janet, it looks great. You are amazing!

Love, love, love it. Again I want to scoff at you not feeling like a good decorator when you first moved into your house. You should be giving classes on this stuff.

The twins turning ten tells me that I have now known you for 10 years! I get all choked up thinking about how our friendship started and how Heavenly Father made sure that we met. He knew that I would need a friend like you (and Val) for the rest of my life. Love you!

You are so on the ball! My house needs a Janet makeover real bad. And I think I could sit and read your blog all day and just laugh and laugh. I love the seatbelt story. You're so dang funny!

That looks awesome, Janet. Do you want to come help me spruce up my laundry room and second bathroom? You do great stuff. I love all the rooms in your house. Did you use the laser level? If you did, isn't it wonderful?

Janet,

Good design is good design. Will you please allow me to share some constructive criticism?

Positives:

1. vertical stripes will make the room look taller. Awesome

2. laundry room! why not? Like Ikea says, "be brave, not beige"

3. the two most important items in any project whether it be a laundry room or the Sistine Chapel are time and resources; you kept both under budget.

Areas of concern:

1. colors...not my favorites, but to each his own, right? Just be ready to stand by your decision.

2. I hope you got at least a semi-gloss finish b/c you have (adorable) kids; the more glossy the paint the more kid resistant the paint.

3. you get what you pay for, and there's a reason that mustard yellow, green, and orange paint at Walmart is $15.

It's a good start. Keep your creativity going! I'm sending you a bloging high five.

Why haven't you posted pictures of your bathroom yet? Seriously, you knock my socks off with your crazy, spontaneous one day projects. Did you read this idea from a magazine? Do you read magazines?

becks said...

I think you need to post pictures of the beach bathroom too. Although it might not be as good on the blog as in person. The laundry room definitely isn't.

btw, it was so much fun to see you! I can't believe you only had a few hours of sleep! you crazy girl.

janet said...

Em.. Thank you SO much for the laser level. It made this project a million times easier!

As far as reading decorating books, I stay far away. Every time I pick up a magazine that tells me what I "have" to do, I get stressed out. That's exactly why I felt so inadequate to decorate my house.. because I have no idea what is SUPPOSED to look good. One day, I woke up and realized that I can do whatever I want. And that's when I got to work. And I am having lots of fun. However, I am sure I will get criticized by the decor critics.. which brings me to Mr. Warby.

Andy... Thanks for the blogging high five! Of course the paint is semi-gloss. and why do you need to stand by your color decision when it only takes a day to paint over it? Of course, I wouldn't chose these colors for my living room (I am considering a bit of orange and green for my bedroom though...) What colors do you suggest, because I totally agree that beige is boring!

I have actually been pleasantly surprised by Walmart's paint. I bought the expensive stuff (Duration by Sherwin) for the rest of my house and I am not so impressed. I have needed to repaint at least 10 different spots in one month. I have read several reviews that aren't so pleased with the pricey paint either.. I guess I am learning trial by error.

Ang and Becky-- I am not ready to post pictures of the bathroom yet. so stop asking. I still have a lot of work to do in there and may just wait until there is an up and running fish tank before I share pictures with the world. Either that or hire a real artist who knows what they are doing!

did you have a method to your madness? I would be afraid the lines wouldn't match up or I wouldn't measure them the right distances. I just need an ounce of your creativity.

janet said...

No method whatsoever. No measuring.. no equal distances. I wanted it random and wild. I wish I would have done a bit more white (thicker lines in between.) I did a few thick ones and think I like them better. Anyway, off to take a nap.. only two hours of quite time, I better use it wisely.

I am a long time reader, but have never commented. I know that I don't "KNOW" you, but this laundry room has personality written all over it. and I think that's exactly what you are all about.

Thanks for the inspiration. You make me laugh out loud at least once a week. That says a lot! have a great day!

Well, here I am. You know you can't post the home stuff without getting a comment from me right?

Well, I give it to ya, This room was a fun crafty low budget project.

And it goes to show that we have built no relationship over blogging whatsoever.

But, it's cool...what do they say? One mans Treasure is another man's massacre?

hee hee hee. ...like you said, those who spend no time in there have NO say in how you 'decorate' it.

But I will say, you have a lot of friends that lie to you. Maybe we are better friends than I thought?

Cute, cute, cute! Thanks also for the organization tip! I lost my pair of scissors last Saturday and they still haven't shown up. It drives me crazy when little hands carry items from one place to another. I'm totally going to try out the shoe organizer. Thanks!

You are so my idol.

Marci said...

oh, and I wanted to say that even though "DEE" THINKS she knows what she's talking about, I wouldn't listen to her. Your home should be a reflection of who you are and what you love. Most professionally decorated homes aren't homey or personal. I love that you do what you want because YOU want to do it, not because what other people tell you looks good. I really do like the colors and would much rather be doing laundry in that room than in my plain old boring white one!

campblondie said...

Didn't you have a pair of pants like that in college? If not you should have.

janet said...

yes, I did Kell. and I am pretty sure you wore them during our "Down on Bended Knee" performances.

Wouldn't it be a tragedy if I digitalized those old videos and posted them on the blog.. either a tragedy or we'd become rich and famous..

Wow! It turned out great!

oh my gosh, you are too popular, you have so soo sooo many comments on every post. love love love the laundry room, did you think the stripes were hard? i think they are challenging. love the shoe bin idea, gonna have to adopt that one when i get a house with a laundry room. the kids are so cute, i bet they loved doing that project.

wish we lived closer so we could do more home projects together, can't wait to see your master bedroom, you should totally do the clothespin idea in your house somewhere, it's so easy.

so the header, i just can't crop it so it's shorter, it seems kind of big, i'm just frutrated with my blog right now, i am in the midst of changes but am not skilled in the html department as i would like, come over and make it better, i know you could get to look the way my head wants it to look.

well, love the room, can't wait to see more of your house projects, and hear more about naked kids running around, it's so funny.

GAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Isn't it sad that it's the first thing I noticed?? Oh, and the paint :) You are brave Janet. Very brave. I bet you'll get a lot of great reactions when people are taking a tour of your house and see it for the first time. Of course--now you've shown the whole bloody world on your blog...so...

I don't know about everyone else, but I am most definitely NOT lying when I say that I LOVE it! So, so, SO fun! I think it is the perfect color combo for a laundry room. Even my hubby thinks it looks awesome. (And, sadly, he's the decorating pro around my house. It is definitely not my calling in life)

I have been working as an interior designer for 30 years and all I have to say is WAY TO GO! Maybe I love the colors because I was around in the 70's to appreciate them, but they are definitely coming back in style. A laundry room is a great place to do something fun and creative. And when you are ready to put the house up for sale, you can easily repaint it something neutral. I think you should enjoy the space you have while you live in it and don't worry about what others think. You go girl!

Oh, and your blog is hilarious! Even an old girl like me gets your jokes and relates to your parenting stories!

I freaking love how the interior design majors (warby and dee) jumped all over this post. Designing a house is stressful for me too, because I totally wanted it perfect and "right". And I had the same realization...this is not a science, people! If I like it, it is right to ME. Some people take this way too seriously and act like a certain color choice is the end of the world. Well, when the end of the world comes, NO one will care what color your laundry room is. They WILL however be knocking on your door to beg for some of those meals in your freezer. Come ON, people, it is a LAUNDRY room. And a FUN one, at that. Well done, Janet! So glad you are having fun.

Emilee said...

I LOVE the look! The WHOLE look- colors, vertical stripes, thick white lines, etc. Way to go!!

val said...

so glad i came back to check out the comments. you know i always forget to do that.
i was having a design discussion today with raelynn while chasing kids around the library, cause i always seem to check out the same kind of books: photography, baking/cookbooks and decorating books. i think decorating is so individual. yeah styles come and go but really it depends on what "you" like so there's not really a right or wrong. there is definitely styles i hate and some i love. i am very opinionted about design/decorating -blame my dad but when it comes down to it if you like something in your home than it's the RIGHT way to decorate.
if i had a bedroom to paint i would paint it a dark greyish...this week anyway.

It looks awesome! What a fun color scheme. Now I am not thinking my own laundry paint job is so cool (one wall blue, the rest tan - so daring !). Just one question - how do you get your paint lines so crisp? No paint seeped underneath - a problem I have had in the past when doing stripes. I am dying to know your trick!
