our first scorpion!!

Yesterday we read everything we could about praying mantises. Today we learned about scorpions. After we looked at a gazillion pictures of scorpions and read all kinds of (useless) facts, I got the heebie-jeebies and told the kids how grateful I was that we've never seen one in real life.

After four years of living in Vegas, a big old scorpion decided to join us in our kitchen, just hours after we finished studying about them. It was a mere 6 inches away from my bare feet when Zack said excitedly, "Hey! It's a real life scorpion!" and then I screamed like a girl. Daddy grabbed a pair of scissors and cut off it's tail.... which made it scamper across the floor! The boys were all yelling, "Dad! Don't just cut off it's tail, it can grow back!" And then they spouted off all kinds of information we learned earlier, "It's babies might be riding on it's back!" and "they have two venom glands!" I took a picture of it when it was alive (and had a tail) but I wanted nothing to do with it after that. It was killed and examined and thrown in the garbage. Wanna see it?

A few weeks ago, someone found 3 scorpions in our church building... they just so happened to be in the TOY BINS in the nursery. Doesn't that make you want to come and visit us? Soon?

I've lived in Vegas my whole life, and I don't think I've ever seen a scorpion! You must just be the lucky one!

Oh for the love, I would have freaked out. So creepy, but kind of cool after just having learned about them. I REALLY hope that I don't ever find one in my house!

Oh my... *shudder* Seriously, every time my husband tries to talk me into moving south (mainly Arizona), all I can think is, "No way... scorpions." I think they are just about the creepiest thing to walk this earth. Thanks for the picture. I'm going to be shuddering for days.

How ironic that you saw one just after studying about them. Ew, creepy!! We've seen them in St. George but not here...and I hope we don't. That one looks big too! And in the nursery bins, double yikes!

Emily! You hate me? Because I posted a picture of it or because I told you there were some in the nursery? or because you're jealous that I had one in my house?

No way!!! I was so scared of seeing one this summer! I'm so glad I didn't! (I probably would have thought it was a little cool though :)

Cindy- you would have loved it and begged everyone to leave it alone. That was one of the main things I learned about you! You are so nice to bugs!! I miss having you here because you always took care of them for me. And by taking care of them, I mean--not killing, but still getting rid of them.

PS. we're all at the computer at the same time!

There is a high probability that we're going to have to move out of state over the next year. I'm having a hard time deciding where to move to and I'm not exaggerating when I say the local pests are my deciding factor. I hate winter, but I love not having cochroaches, fleas, chiggers and scorpions to deal with.

P.S. That thing was HUGE!!!! Ick.

Ummmmmmmm, gag. My first experience with a scorpion was in Honduras on my mission. I woke up with one hanging over my face (luckily it was chilling on my bug net and wasn't toughing me). That is one bug that I can't handle.

That by far is one of the things I am most afraid of here. Ewww. Looking at that thing makes me shudder.
