the book

that's right, folks. It's finished! I finally have it in my hands and I couldn't be happier! I know last time I reported on it, it was corrupted. Blurb (the company I printed it from) could NOT figure out the problem.. after a month of going back and forth... talking to the supervisor's supervisor's boss, I received the news, "Start over." It was then that I realized I have more power and abilities than computer programmers. I opened the files to my corrupted book, went through a few hundred pages of codes and I figured it out!! I couldn't believe that I did it, but when it finally opened and allowed me to print, I was dancing around the house.... I reported back to Blurb with the corrupted file codes and they thanked me with a $20 discount for figuring it out-- supposedly they had 50+ other books with the same problem. I was thinking $20 was a little low for doing all the work on my own.. what about a computer programmers salary.. or at least a free book? But I wasn't really disappointed. My real reward was solving the puzzle and getting my book!!

It is 200 pages, exactly. Besides the major file corruption and the month of frustration, I like the software and would recommend the company. I will definitely be making and printing other books from them... Again, the company is Blurb and you can start fresh and add whatever pictures or text you want or you can download the posts from your blog directly.. so much easier than copying and pasting the format. It is a little slow and freezes frequently (especially when you are dealing with 200 pages... 900 + pictures, etc.) But this is the best thing out there, and I am confident it will get better. I paid $35 for my book (hardcover) that was shipping included, but with the $20 off. Their website has a price list and it depends on how many pages you print. Shipping is reasonable and I believe it took 3 days to arrive. Any other questions?

Here are a few pages, just to get an idea of the different layouts. You can put 30 pictures on one page, or make your favorite photos 8x10. They have several page layout options-- and you can change them to fit the way you like. And if you ever have any issues with corrupted files, I would be happy to help you out. I charge $25/hour for my computer services--- I accept all major credit cards.

Happy 300th post to me.. what a perfect way to celebrate!
And a big thanks to Ben for being my hand model.

SOOOO AWESOME!! I'm going to do this once I've got a years worth of blog entries (that's soon!). BTW, the company must not have very good programmers--my brothers are programmers and can figure ANYTHING out!! (Maybe a new career for you is in the making...they make good $$).

Looks awesome - glad you were able to figure out the glitch. Yes, $20 was a little low-ball. Try x 3...

PS - How do you get the collage look on your pictures? Is that with Picasa?

You really should try to make a career out of programming. Especially if you knew more than the company. Your book looks great. I'm also waiting until I have enough posts. Then I will do this. What a great way to save your blog.

Your book looks fantastic, it's inspired me to work harder on mine...And I KNOW mine won't be that long!

Ok so a curious mind has to know...are you blurbing your posts regularly now so that the work is not that intensive for next year's book?

That is awesome. What an amazing book for you guys to look back on and love and laugh at. Great memories to keep and remember. I want to do one after I've been blogging for a while.

The collage on the cover is from Picasa, but some of the full page collages are a layout page (individual pictures uploaded.) I like the collages because you are dealing with only one picture rather than 16.. It's a time saver.

And Steph-- I have not started on my 2008 book yet.. I am not downloading and keeping up with my book too.. I am doing a 2006 book, though.. I am sure it won't be as long because i didn't record the small stuff, but at least I will have the major holidays and birthdays documented. does that answer your question.

the book is really cool!
Kim Whalen did something like this for some of the trips they went on. I've seen them at church, her kids love to look at them and it keeps them quiet during Sacrament.
I think this would be a cool idea for Olivia. That way, i don't have to rewrite everything into a scrapbook.

Horray Janet. I'm so glad you have it and you love it. I need to open up the software again and get going but it's so overwhelming to me. I'm not sure I started mine right in the first place. It's not as user friendly as I was hoping. Grr. And how cool that you cracked the code! Great work.

You've inspired me to want to do a book of my own, although I know it won't be anywhere near as cute as yours. It's still a great idea for anyone! Congratulations and a job well done to you.

janet... what a treasure!!! i can't wait to print my book out. i can't believe how cheap it is. think of the money you save, not printing photos! i am totally going to print my blog out at the end of the year. thanks so much for the info and inspiration!

I love your book! I too just made a book on Blurb, and I am very pleased with it. I made a baby book for Ethan (What do you mean it's a bit late? He's only 5!). Anyway, it sure beats scrapbooking, which I really suck at. The quality of the book was great, however I would do more pages next time (for some reason I got cheap and tried to scrimp it all into 26 pages, which turned out okay, but it would've been better longer!). Anyway, I'm glad you like your book. You sure spent a lot of time and effort! I'm sure your family will love having it to look years down the road!

Impressive--it looks so good! I need to set aside some time to finish ours. That really is a decent price when you think about all the memories it holds! Happy 300th post!

I cannot believe it cost that much! I buy a book from mypublisher.com each year for our family and pay at least triple that! That's amazing!
