While I was homeless/internet-less, I received quite a few emails asking all kinds of questions, mostly having to do with blogging. I sat down this afternoon to answer them individually, but decided to post just the answers for the world wide web to see.. just in case you were wondering too. Just scroll down to the question that applies to you..
1. How do you make your picture collages?
Most of my photo collages are made with a FREE, super user-friendly software called Photoscape. I am so happy to see that SO MANY people are using this program, because it's DA BOMB. It's simple and allows you do to lots of cool things with your pictures (cropping, borders, text, etc.) However, I must tell you that if you are going to create a collage, you really need to resize it after the pictures are in... If you ever plan on printing your blog into a book, these collages won't be large enough to print.. You will be really frustrated when uploading all your cute collages, but not being able to include them in your book. You will either have to create them again (and make them big so the quality is better) or you'll have to upload each of your pictures separately for the book-- either way, it's going to take you more time and work Plus, if you're shrinking 5-10 shots into one picture, the rest of us want to click on it and see it enlarged, like so.. (here's where you click on the picture to see it enlarged.)
This is HOW you make your collages bigger: In the PAGE option in Photoscape, on the top right hand corner, there is a SAVE and EDIT button, before you edit your collage (where you add text, etc.) click on the little walnut tab below the edit button-- this will give you the option to resize your entire collage and still keep the picture quality. I always do mine at 300% If you wait to resize it in the EDIT tab, it will stretch your pictures and change the quality.. Another tip is to make it large AFTER you've put the pictures in their place.. it makes them easier to maneuver (and to see if they are centered, etc.)
2. Do you think Picasa is user-friendly, why did you stop using it?
It's still a good program and I use it every once in a while. When you have a ton of photos and don't want to drag them in a collage seperately, it's great. For those of you who don't care about cutesy borders or text, Picasa is pretty self-explanitory. It's quick and does the work for you, for example:

3. Would you recommend Blurb to print your book?
Even though I had a huge headache with Blurb, I would most definitely do it again. I don't know of a better (or cheaper) software, so until then, I will am sticking with them. I am not currently doing a 2008 book. Instead, I decided to work on a book for years prior to blogging. It's more pictures and less writing (since I can't remember the details of the events two years ago.. sad.) When I printed 2007's book, it was 200 pages and over 900 pictures. I believe having picture collages helped the uploading process...
4. How did you do your Label Cloud?
Blogger doesn't give you an option to do a label cloud (they automatically post in a long list on the side bar.. it doesn't look very flattering, especially when you have lots of labels.) But you can easily create a cloud by changing your HTML code. The instructions are long, so I am not going to post them, but if you want a copy of the code, email me and I will send them to you (janetleeshumway at gmail dot com.) Before you can install this code, you need to label your posts. Once their are all labeled, you can install your cloud and change the colors to whatever matches your blog. Like I said, you have to be willing to play around with your HTML code.
5. Do you really track those who visit your site?
Absolutely. But it's not like I care if you visit my site a couple of times a day.. Bloggers actually LIKE other people to read their blogs, even if they don't know these people. We all blog hop and I don't label you as crazy if you stop by often. The tracking system that I use ISN'T very user-friendly, but it's better than nothing. You will have to add an HTML code to your blog as a new gadget and then go back to Statcounter to see who's looking at your blog. Some of you are freaking about that other people can see when you check their blog and how often you do it, but I don't think it's a big deal... Don't let a little tracker keep you from reading your favorite blogs. If you have a blog, I would advise you to get a tracker... because it's like you're spying on the people who are spying on you. Ha, ha, ha.
Also, Google Reader is a great tool to track your favorite blogs. Once you subscribe to a blog, it will send you a feed with their updates.. this way, you don't have to visit each site individually. It's a huge time saver for me (although I still have 400 posts to read from this past month from other bloggers.. there will be a day when I will feel caught up!)
6. Sorry I never have time to comment.
I know this isn't a question, but I am going to address it anyway. Obviously you have time to comment or you wouldn't be taking time to read the blog in the first place. Commenting takes all of two seconds. I personally do not comment on every post that I read, but if I regularly visit a blog, I try to comment to let them know that I stopped by, I read what they had to say and I either related in some way or thought it was interesting. This is common courtesy, people. It's also very awkward to run into someone you don't know, say for instance at the library, who knows all about you and you don't recognize them at ALL. I hate to point you out (MARCI!) but you still never comment, so I feel justified. It makes the relationship awkward because it's totally one-sided. Commenting and saying something is only flattering to the person writing the blog (even if you happen to disagree with what they say.) They are not going to think you are a weirdo for commenting. Don't feel guilty for reading someone else's blog (unless you are neglecting your kids all day :) The only thing you SHOULD feel guilty about is coming back day after day and not commenting! If you don't comment because you don't have a blog of your own, that's understandable. But when you DO get a blog of your own, you will know how vulnerable you feel when you post something-- you see that lots of people read it-- and you don't get any comments. It ain't good for your self esteem. So, if you read something and find it funny or relate-able, tell them so, for heaven's sake! It's the right thing to do. If Jesus was blogging, he would totally comment.
7. Why don't you answer my email or comment on my blog anymore?
Because I was homeless and didn't have a computer. I really feel bad about leaving some of you hanging. I realize that I have a home and a computer now, but I still have to unpack (and take care of three kids!) My husband already thinks I am on the computer enough as it is, so a girl can only do so much! Please forgive me. I will try to get back with you, ASAP... and if you start using my name as a "5-letter-word" at your house because I never return your email, I will only find it funny. (Hi Nova! Seriously, that was some good stuff!)
8. When are you going to post pictures of your home?
When I want to. Gosh! I am still in boxes. I just got dressers in the bedrooms yesterday. If you are waiting for pictures to be hung and the house to be painted, you are going to be waiting until next year. If you want to see it that badly, come and visit. If not, it's gonna be a while. Like 2010.
9. Are you Homeschooling this year?
You better believe it. Although, we are currently doing more unpacking and playing and less schooling. I am definitely stressed about it and I even considered putting the older boys in school.. for about 5 minutes. Then I told myself to relax, get situated and not worry about what they aren't learning. They are good kids and they will be fine. My plans for homeschooling this year include music lessons and Spanish... and, of course, lots of reading.
10. When are you going to have another baby?
As soon as I can get/stay pregnant. We've been trying for what seems like forever. I have had three mini-miscarriages this past year, all ending in the first trimester (my last one happened in the middle of our move.. talk about going through a lot all at once!) I really want another baby, but I am [surprisingly] doing well. I think I have accepted the fact that if I can't have any more kids, I would be just fine. I don't see any point to wish for something that isn't possible right now. That doesn't mean we aren't still trying, but I have been blessed immensely and don't want to seem ungrateful for all that I have.
11. When are you coming up to Utah again?
In a week. One of my BFF's is getting married and I am flying in without the kids for a mini vacation... it will be a quick trip. Hope to see you at the wedding reception because that's what I will be doing while I am there.
12. What are you going to be for Halloween?
Are you kidding me? As if I would tell you! Yes, we have our costumes planned out and yes, it's gonna be fabulous, but I am not giving away any details. Let's just say that The Force will be with us.
That's all I have time for, Amigos. I've gotta get dinner on the table... Until next time.

not this cute anymore!

Janet, I read and LOVE your blog. I should comment more, I'm sorry.
I'm sorry about your miscarriages, that is really hard. Good luck un-packing and fixing up your new home! I guess I'll have to be patient and wait for pictures :)
This is sort of weird. I do not know you exactly you look so familiar and you were at ricks the same time I was I think. Anyway I did know your husband at ricks he was in my ward my first semester. I love your blog and decided to let you know. I hope you don't mind me reading. My name is Nicolle Cleverly Higley
Nicolle, you definitely look familiar to me. Were you friends with Shannon (pretty, tall, blonde?) Did you and Aaron go to a dance together? We were just looking at old pictures because Dustin Peterson (who was also in your ward, I think) is now in our ward in Vegas. Anyway, it's a small world afterall. And of course I don't mind you reading. So glad you said hi!
I'm really sorry to hear about your miscarriage :(
I'm so sorry you had a miscarriage during your move. You are such an amazing person to be so strong. Thank you for your testimony on Sunday. It was very inspirational. If you need anything please let me know.
You have an amazing blog. Thanks for sharing some of your secrets with us!!
Thanks for answering my question...didn't realize you were in such high demand around here. You should start charging.
Hey girlie... I look forward to your blog posts every single day! Yours is the first I check. You usually make my whole week. You are one strong chica and your boys are soooo lucky to have you. XOXO I miss you!
I read. I related. Something told me you would want to know that.
well, i got a blog now and that means i better start leaving comments. i enjoyed this post because it was so helpful for me! thanks for emailing too. check mine out. it still needs some work, i don't really know how else to pretty it up but i'll get there...with your help! love ya janet!
Janet, you are a plethera (sp?) of information! I love it.
If you ever need help painting or anything, let me know :)
Janet, you are a plethera (sp?) of information! I love it.
If you ever need help painting or anything, let me know :)
Janet, you rock.
Many times I have wanted to comment on your blog, but I usually read blogs when I'm feeding my bambino... and I really just don't enjoy the one handed type thing. Then when I have both hands available, I get distracted and forget. Sorry for neglecting you! :) You are a fun read. I was trying to explain to my non-blogging sisters why it is rude to never leave a comment. You explained it so perfectly - the whole vulnerability thing... I'll have to send them over (more lurkers coming your way!).
I also found Photoscape thanks to you and your little link way at the bottom of your blog. I LOVE it and have sent about 5 friends over to it as well (your cousin Tiffani being one of them - she was trying to use Photoshop to make collages, what a pain!). It is so cool! Thanks for the tidbits about resizing the collages. I just recently found that feature, but didn't think to try it AFTER I put my pictures in! This will make life MUCH easier!
You are a gem, and I don't even know you. I guess I feel a kinship with you since we both have a ZACK - spelled the best way ever!
Sorry to hear about the miscarriages. I'm sure that has been difficult to go through! Good luck with the baby makin biz!
So sorry about your miscarriages. You didn't mention them during our phone calls. You have a great attitude being thankful for what you have but I know you'd like a little girl. It could happen--you're so young.
I've enjoyed the latest blogs, funny and interesting as usual. The response from your father-in-law to your question was really funny and now you probably can't that tune out of your mind.
I think this is the brother who came to Spokane with your parents and you brought them to meet me.
Good thing I'm not going to be doing a blog as your answers were Greek to me.
It sounds like you're slowly getting some things accomplished. Hope it gets easier as time goes by. I thought Ben and Luke already spoke Spanish. Love to all.
Thanks Janney, I am learning, but I still need all of this advice.
Loved your blog! I'm officially homeschooling now. I signed Audrey up through a public charter school, because they offer a great one-day-a week program, that she's going to love!! So far we're doing their worksheets, or at least using them as a jumping off point for doing some more exploring. It's harder than I expected. Not doing school together, that's alot of fun, but Audrey's friends all going off to school, and not having more time to myself. But I imagine I'd really miss her if she were gone all day. Thanks for your encouragement!!
Thanks for the oodles of info. I tend to look to your blog for tips on improving mine, and you're a huge help!
I'm sorry about the miscarriages. You are a rock. I had a miscarriage (at only 9 weeks) a couple of years ago and I was a wreck for almost a month. I can't believe you just went through one (your THIRD at that) and are able to continue functioning. I must be a bit melodramatic.
Good luck with the "trying". Not that I don't love intimate time with my husband...but sometimes trying to get preggo really sucks. We tried for 2 years with our last one and I was ready to shoot someone. A big WAY TO GO to you for having such an amazing attitude about it.
I wouldn't dare NOT leave a comment!
My face is EXHAUSTED from all my laughing today... I had to go through all my confessions again when my sister came over.
My kids are proud of me for coming clean... yes they often read too... I'm raising little lurkers in my homeschool.
You read my mind though... I thought I'd wait til we became better acquainted before I begged for more info on the blogging front but you've answered most of my questions!... You always know what to say!
I officially signed up with a name, profile and EVERYTHING! Are you proud of me or what? I feel bad that this is my first comment (especially that I have been reading faithfully now for a year) but I guess I just felt dumb for saying anything when we had never met.
Seeing you in the library that day was crazy because I almost felt like I had run into a celebrity. And as dumb as this sounds, I watched you for like 15 minutes with your boys before I came up and said hello. It was hard for me to believe you were the real thing, but you were all sitting, cuddled up by the bean bags and I figured I had to say something. I think it's harder to admit that you are a fan in person rather than over a computer, so you have to give me a little credit.
the truth is, everyone can relate to you. you are very REAL and very positive at the same time. it's an unusual combination because it's not like you deny that there is anything negative going on in your life, you just chose to see the positive in it and it's very refreshing.
how's that for a first comment? I promise to comment often and just sent you an invite to my private blog. This way we can have a two-way friendship and you won't feel so awkward next time we meet in public!
oh, and I must say to the rest of your readers, that you are hilarious in person. I love that you were so friendly to me, but at the same time slugged me in the shoulder for having not said hello before and I do love that you called me out on your blog and named me! how embarrassing, but it got me to comment, finally.
Anyway, thanks for everything! You've really helped me this past year, and you really should start charging. We will all pay to be your friend and get blogging advice.
Wow! That was impressive! Sounds like it is definetly time to settle down and get back to being the best elementary school teacher ever!
NOVA and MARCI commented in a ROW! Mission accomplished.
First Nova-- you never said what your poll actually said. If you toilet paper my parents house, you will be sorry. I come to WJ often. I have peeps, so you better watch your back.
Secondly, the story with little Caleb was not just that he loved my eyes.. he first said, "Oh, your eyes are so blue, and your teeth are yellow!" It was hilarious coming from such an honest little guy! I am sure you are an excellent homeschooling mother!
Valerie-- so glad to know you are on board. I always stress a bit when school starts because it's fun to get new backpacks and ride on the bus, etc. Make sure to set up fun activities with other homeschoolers. We usually do a "NoT-back to school party" and celebrate our summer. Audrey is such a smart girl and she is lucky to have such fun parents.
Marci- yeah! fun to see pictures of you and your family. And your very first comment ever was very impressive. Hope to see less of you in public. I don't like the idea of you watching me with my kids.. what if I was smacking them or yelling at them or something? Don't follow me around anymore!
Sheri-- although trying for a baby is lots of fun, it is WORK! and sometimes takes the fun out of it. My miscarriages were all early, between 8-9 weeks and even though they were hard emotionally, they weren't so hard on my physically, that's why I have a hard time classifying it as a miscarriage. I almost feel like I didn't earn the right or something.
Kelly-- baby #4 any day! Wish we were still neighbors so I could see him! Are you coming to Vegas any time soon? And I still wig out over your BRO being my bishop!
Andrea-- your blog book question was one of three... you commented about it after I had gotten a couple of emails. and sorry if I was mean about answering the questions. blame it on the hormones!
Cant wait to use photscape! Wahoo! I love making collages.
Hey Janet,
i hope your getting all settled in. Sorry to hear about your miscarriages. I've had 5 myself(from 8 weeks to 13 weeks), so if you ever want to chat, you know where to find me. I'll keep you in my prayers and think little girl thoughts to send your way. I have wanted a boy and yet, I got three girls. Maybe we can trade for a day, jsut so we know what it would be like.
I comment all the time and I am going to use all those blogging tips when I start blogging.
I just need to say that your Jesus commenting quote needs to be on your sidebar. that's a good one.
and way to tell us like it is! you are an inspiration to us all. you do so much and are able to find the joy in everything.
ps. I went over to Nova's blog and I laughed so hard at her confession! too crazy! you are a frickin' celebrity!
Janet the coolest on the planet... get some sponsors on this blog and start raking in the moolah.
Janet- I am so sorry to hear about your miscarriages! Getting pregnant isn't what it's cracked up to be! Love you!
BTW- thanks for the tips.
Janet, I love when you do the "Instruction Posts". Thanks for taking the time to do. Sorry about the miscarriages. It is hard. I know. Some people think we chose to have a 1-kid family... You rock, by the way!! Love, Sam
Yes Shannon was my roommate. I didn't go to a dance with Aaron my roommate did but I think we maybe were in the same group. You will have to tell Aaron and Big D(Dustin) hello for me if they even remember.
I loved your testimony too this past Sunday. I laughed hard when you said, "our family just moved into the ward" You are so funny! So glad to have you back!
You never answer the question-- why don't you go professional with this? You know you're the next Dooce. Why don't you start doing ads and getting your name out there. because the world needs a little more of you.
I'm commenting! But it definitely takes more than two seconds. Thinking of clever things to say that will forever be recorded on Janet's blog is quite a task--you are pretty blog-tasticly-popular, you know! Oh, and for the record, I don't think Jesus would have a blog :) Lots of luck with your three full-time occupations: mom, teacher, and blog guru.
I never said Jesus would have a blog. I just said that if he did, he would totally comment.
and you never know.. blogs are the modern day journals. and that's exactly what the scriptures are-- old journals of amazing people. I'm just saying.
Here I was feeling sorry that you aren't commenting on my blog. I know you are busy but you are super woman and so it's easy to forget that you can't comment when you are homeless.
I wish you could have done the half marathon with me.
Sorry to hear about the miscarriages. They are so awful to go through. I was going to post about how common they are and how nobody talks about having them. But I chickened out.
I hope we get the chance to get together someday. We may be in Vegas for Thanksgiving. But I'm guess that you won't. Let me know.
Oh and any ideas for Halloween for my family? We are going to a super hero party.
The incredibles are already taken. Plus we only have one kid.
What would we all do without you Janet? I would have no clue what I was doing in the blogging world! I love how candid you are..it cracks me up! You are the best!
I'm exited to see what you have planned for Halloween, you're just too creative!
Janet,
I am afraid I am guilty of not commenting, even though I read your blog everyday. I guess I don't feel qualified to comment sometimes. Joining the mommy club makes me feel a little more in the loop, but I am afraid I will still feel stupid commenting. But I want you to know that I do think of you often and really look up to you. You are such a clever funny person with such great faith. I am really sorry to hear about you miscarriages. My one almost killed me, I can't imagine 3. Tim and I love you and your family and hope we get to see you soon. p.s. are you guys gonna be in Utah for Christmas?
Hey. Love your blog. And, the photo tips?! sch-weet!
I have to agree 100% about the commenting... I mean we're putting ourselves out there... give us some love people! I always find myself thinking "why did all these people not comment? was my post dorky?"
I'll be back for sure! And, I'll comment! :>p
Rachel not qualified? I don't think so. You are the queen of confidence! But HOW ARE YOU FEELING? We have all been worried about you after your trip to the hospital! If you don't update your blog soon, I may just have to pick up the phone and call you!!! And you were much farther with your miscarriage than I have been with mine. That's why I hate telling people about it, because even though the pregnancy tests say positive, I don't really ever feel pregnant. (and I haven't allowed myself to get excited until I am past the first trimester.)
I'm starting to feel really out of the loop because I don't have a blog, but I still try to comment whenever I have something to say. I'm sad we didn't get to know each other better when you lived here, but I think you moved out a couple of months after we moved in. I do remember feeding our babies in the mother's room at the same time. By the way, I can't believe you have Halloween planned already. I haven't even admitted to myself that the summer is over.
I am with you on the commenting thing. However I have to say sometimes I feel "dorky" telling someone I don't know how I feel about whatever they wrote (does that make sense?)... I will be commenting on yours, however. I LOVE THE BLOGGING WORLD!
I think you need an apron. The word stepford comes to mind...
OK (wow, sorry I'm in a definate weird mood.) so I do have a legitimate comment on here...I've TRIED working with the blurb books and I HATE IT. I want to cry each and every time I make a new attempt. I just HATE how I cannot change any of the page layouts or formats for the FRONT of the book...all I want to do is a picture wrap with ONE sentence...not a million. So I've decided with much deliberation that I will be using a different printer. After some research, the one that is going to best benifit my needs is http://www.lulu.com/
I think they are more expensive than blurb, but the nice thing is that I can FORMAT my book to look however I WANT it to look using WORD or whatever program I choose and then simply send them a copy in a PDF format (that means it won't change or look weird once it's printed). I'll let you know once I am done...(So like in 10 years.) BUT I am TOTALLY done with blurb.
Give me a call when your house is put back together-I've been meaning to call, but didn't want to bug you...Lets go out for a GNO I need some good girl talk!
oh, my gosh you have so many comments! I too am sorry about your miscarriages. I hope things will work out for you! Where are you living now? Are you still in Vegas?
You don't know me... surprise? I was told to read your blog by others in the blogsphere... and I am glad I took their advice! My name is Kristin and I live in Sandy. Thanks for sharing, sorry to never comment before, but I love your stories, testimony, jokes, etc. You are inspiring!
hi janet. you don't know me. i just found your blog today via the "discover" tool on Google Reader (i love Google reader - makes blog reading much easier).
i am sorry to hear about your miscarriages.
i've only read one post, but i like the way you write.
good luck with homeschooling and unpacking and organizing your new home.
Janet, I love reading your blog. I don't know how you find the time to write so much. Mine is a mess- a few pictures and a small description of the picture. It's hard to find the time. Anyway, I love your positive attitude about having a baby. I am sorry about your miscarriages. I have been trying to have my first for several years and have only had mini- miscarriages. It's frustrating and depressing so I admire your positive attitude. I need to develop that. I hope everything works out for you soon. BTW - tell Azy congrats! I went to her blog and she is the same as ever - beautiful!
Thanks - I put some of this to use already - almost forgot to leave a comment, remembered after making a few little changes to my blog, had to find you again, cruised through your blog to find this section again, ended up stopping and reading the conversation you had with your husband and am still laughing - thanks for sharing!
Jesus would totally comment. I am new to your blog. I looked to find out how to make the picture collages. I will be back and will try to comment. Thanks!
Hi! I came to your blog from someone talking about Photoscape. I am so excited to start using it! I totally agree with #6 about comments!!
